I think I know why no castaways have ever appeared on the island since Ishmael and his followers left.
The ? is swallowing all of the people up, not letting them get to the island... preventing them from getting to the Baudelaires.
Protecting them.

If you had read the book to the end, you would know that the Baudelaires leave the island.

...and if you had read my post, maybe you'd figure out what I'm talking about.
I know the Baudelaires left at the end. I never said they didn't.
Read page 5 in Chapter Fourteen.
Why had no castaways arrived on the island in a year?
Everything ends up on these shores.
The point of this post was to suggest that maybe the Question Mark is swallowing people up so they don't get to the island while the Baudelaires are there.

We don't know how often people wash up. . .
We know that things do all the time, and the passage mentions newspaper documents andother assorted detritus that the Bauds find. I don't think it's the ? at all IMO but it's an interesting theory.

More than rather the ? swallowing people, I thought it was the IDV, and it's certainly not big enough to swallow that many people. Furthermore, at the end, it swims out with an apple in its mouth and tries to save the people on the raft, so it can swim, further supporting my theory that the ? is Ink.
One last thing I noticed - wouldn't Ink die after breathing in the medusiod mycilium spores, too? Or did it manage to skirt them? Did it eat one of the apples itself?

Ink would have had to, at least, bite an apple in order to bring it to the Bauds.

Wait, how can Ink possibly be the ? Go back and read pages 304-305 (American version) very carefully, and you'll see that that's impossible.
As for the ? swallowing people up, I doubt we'll ever find out. There's symbolism attached to the ?, symbolism that implies we'll never know anything about it.

The ? and the IDV mark can't possibly be the same thing. How in the world could it swallow up the Quaqs and escape onto the V.F.D. at the same time?
