I've noticed the expression "taking the mickey" alot in the OotP. I'm assuming it's a british term. Does anyone know what it means?

It's not in the British version at all.
You're sure it's not an American term?
Edit: Nevermind. I found it in my UK version. I'm just guessing here, but maybe "mickey" is slang for a drug of some kind? Lol.

I think it means taking the blame or the easy stuff...I can't remember. Try reading it in context?

i can not remember that phrase being used in OotP. but i dont exactly have a photographic memory, so dont listen to me... It was in the train scene. Ron was joking about someone (either Crabbe or Goyle) writing lines ("I must not look like a baboon's backside"). Luna L was laughing like a maniac and Ron asked her if she was taking the mickey. |

well, then I have no clue...
I always thought a "Mickey" was like an easy class or something (like they said in Loser).
but maybe that is something else...
It's all from memory, and a shoddy one at that.

I've looked it up and it means to poke fun at someone, or taking the mickey out of someone. Being mean.
So when Ron said it to Luna he thought she was laughing in a sarcastic way to make fun of him. I think. I'm still a bit confused.
I also found out that "Wotcher!" (which Tonks said to Harry once) means "What cheer!" which is a british greeting. Heheh.

No, the movie Loser, starring Jason Biggs (Of American Pie Shame...er...fame) and that one girl who's really cool but I don't know her name (Mena Survi? I don't know. Her character rocks though) and EVERCLEAR (Yes, my beloved Everclear make an appearance! Worth it alone!). I guess it's a sort of stupid movie, but I love it anyway. Though, by some odd twist of fate, "Loser" by Beck came on the radio. Again. |
