I think it is pretty safe to say that Snape is spying on Voldemort for Dumbledore. But exactly how is he going about this? Is he pretending to be on Voldemort's side? Voldemort can obviously see when people are lying, and what their intentions are, so can he see through Snape. Maybe not, since Snape is also very gifted in Occlumency. Anyway, this is exactly what I think Snape did: He took over Barty Crouch Jr.'s body, after the dementor sucked out his soul. He then apparated at Voldmort's side and told him that he had escaped from Hogwarts, but first Dumbledore had Viritaserumed the truth out of him. Then he told Voldemort that he was going to continue to spy for him using someone else body (?) whose? You think this theory is possible? Tell me if you don't, but be sure to include the reasons, and what you think Snape is up to.  |

I think it's very possible. It certainly seems like the smartest way of going about things, without Voldie seeing through him.

I kinda don't understand the theory.
Although I remember in GoF, in the chapter "The Death Eaters" when Voldemort is going around looking at all the death eaters, he comes to the spot that had the most gaps:
3 were dead
1 too scared to come back (Karkaroff)
1 who left forever (Snape)
1 who was still alive and Volie's most faithful servent (Crouch Jr.)
Now in the book, I'm assuming it implied that Snape did leave forever. but one never knows...

Another theory going around is that Snape was actually at the meeting after Voldemort's rebirth (which seems to make sense). There are some articles in the editorial section of MuggleNet.

Never thought that Snape might be at the meeting. He might have been though. Then who was the one who had left Voldything's ranks forever? Could it be Professor Sinistra? (don't know where that came from if just popped into my head)

Although it could be b/c I'm kinda tired and I'm not reading it carefully enough... huh, yeah, I do see what you mean when Snape could've been at the meeting. I mean, it also said that Voldemort passed some death eaters, but didn't say anything to them. One of them could've been Snape. |

Well, that's all an assumption. Rowling likes to throw them in our faces later on when something unexpected happens. He never specifically named Snape, so Snape may be the one who is still alive and is Voldie's most faithful servant... you never know. Of course, I'm a huge Snape fan and this has bugged me for quite some time. I think there's at least one article at either The Sugar Quill or the HP Lexicon that muses about this.... However, I'm pretty sure Snape can't be spying in a direct way (ie: going to the meetings). I think he's just using some of his contacts (Lucius, my dear sweet Avery, etc) to squeeze out information... the occlumency must come in handy, there. But I think it would be too stupid of Snape to just show up at the meetings when he's so obviously betrayed Voldemort... unless he hasn't, which is another story. And of course, if you believe the Dumbledore is evil theory, everything changes. But I honestly don't think all the Death Eaters were present at that meeting thinggy, either. After all, everyone's always talking about those dark years when everywhere you turned there was a Death Eater and they were killing everyone and there were only a small fraction of people devoted to Dumbledore and willing to risk their lives, etc. There must be several levels of Death Eater (Formidable Forman, Devious Doorman, Pessimistic Prof... I'm sure they organize them with those very titles  ), and I don't think all of them attended the meeting, only the most faithful. I don't know if Snape was ever in that circle. Anyhoo... if there are several layers, the bottom-most ones would be kept in the dark, mostly, so Snape could easily sponge some information off them, if that was how he was going about it. That was altogether too long... Death Eaters and their politics and organization and how they recruit and all were always my favourite Harry Potter topics, though... I don't think snape is evil, no way! He has already proven to dumbleodre that he is trustworthy, and what dumbleodre believes in, I believe in.
In an upcoming book I think that dumbledore will reveal to harry the details of when snape was spy for him.
I don't think that snape is actually pretending to be on voldemort's side becuase, lets admit it, he's not stupid. Either of them are. Voldie would see straight through him. And snape and dumbledore know that.
Maybe snape's using poly juice potion and is drinking it regularly lile barty crouch jr did.
