I'm making a broom for my son. He's never read the books (He's only 8), but he's seen the movies and loves to play Harry Potter.
So, he found a sturdy, thick stick in the woods when we were out hiking. He asked me to make it into a broom for him, and of course I said sure.
The stick had no bark, so I sanded it smooth, and trimmed both ends because they were raggedy. Then I stained it and put a few coats of polyurethane on it to seal it all and give it a nice semi-gloss finish.
Tomorrow we're going to go into the woods again and find lots of long straight sticks. (I hope we can find enough. Sites on the internet talk about birch twigs, but there aren't a lot of birch trees around here.) We'll bundle them and bind them to the stick. Glue them good and spray with more polyurethane.
I don't know who's more excited, my son or me. I love making this kind of stuff, but he probably won't let me play with it when it's done. Of course, when it is done, I'll be sure to post some pictures for you all.

That is so cool. I love to make stuff like that too. We had these brooms (decorative though) that were make out of dried grasses, woven adn then tied at the end. My sister and I played with them a lot.

That's amazing. I'm not creative enough to figure out how to do that. But it sounds really cool.
I can't wait for the pictures. It sounds awesome.

Here it is! The broom is done! The sticks on the end are a bit fragile, so I keep telling my son he's got to be careful with it. We'll see how long it lasts.

Awwe! That broom is a piece of art. You should mass produce them and sell them on ebay.

What a cute little blondie!
The amazing thing is the shape of the stick, the way it has bends for the "handle" and for the "seat." Well done!

Thank you!
He's always wanting to be Malfoy because of his blond hair, but I won't let him because Malfoy is evil. I'm hoping he'll let me temporarily dye his hair brown when we go to the book release party.

Wow, you're such a cool mom. I wouldn't let my kids dye their hair until they were 18.

Hehe. You could probably buy some of that spray can hair coloring stuff... or whatever, and it will wash out in the shower.

Yup, the temporary dye would work. That's so cool! I have no artistic ability whatosever so if I made one it wouldn't have turned out nearly as well.

For plays, to create gray hair, I use liquid white shoe polish. It washes out easily. You could probably do the same with black or dark brown. Put some on your hand first to make sure it washes off.
