In the real world, when a tree falls, something will be around to hear it--a bug, a bird, a bacterium. But if a tree falls in a vaccuum, it makes no sound, period.

If a tree falls and there is nothing to hear it then no it does not make a sound. It will produce sound waves, but since there is nothing to receive them no sound will exist.

M: According to my science teacher, Mr. C, it makes vibrations of the air with the petentiol to be sound, but not a sound. Endy: To make a sound, it has to be heard. M: Or, according to him, it does. Endy: Whenever we get stuck on theese questions, we both get extremely agnsty and irritated. M: In short, yes and no. Endy: And the sound of one hand clapping is, "cl--." M: Yay for Terry Pratchett references. M: Oh, I hate you, Cakesniffer. You got to it before me. Oh well, I'll keep my post and just shoot you a dirty look. Endy: Heh, everyone's faster than us.

Before I'd even heard of this question, I knew "If a tree falls in the forest, and it hits a mime, does anyone care?" from a Gary Larsen comic, so it ruined the impact for me when I first heard the original question....kinda.

I'd heard; If a man says something, and there isn't a woman around to hear him, is he still wrong?
I think it's probably a take on that. Stupid one, though.

the statement says though "if a tree falls..." so, therefore it DID fall because, well because it said in the quote that it DID infact fall! If some old dude trips on a stump, falls and dies, and there's no one around to see or hear, it still happened, there are just no witnesses.

...It was asking if it made a sound, not if it happened...
