Though I doubt that Daniel Handler decided a specific place for it to be, if we have to pick a place, Australia is a pretty safe idea. But ASOUE could take place on another planet or in another universe or something...

Another planet, that just happens to have several authors and poets from our world, as well as having had the first world war. Also it has several of the coutries we have here. Praps a parralel universe.

Okay, I'm obviously the only person on this thread who sincerely doesn't think that it's in Australia. Why? I just don't picture it there. I can't see the Baudelaires speaking in Australian accents. Or having anything to do with boomerangs. (Though trust that to come up in the next two books now that I've said that.)
I think that ASOUE doesn't take in any specific worldly location. I always pictured it in a fantasy sort of America, with Victorian era clothing, 20s era cars, trolleys, yet quite a modern school of mind.

I always pictured it in a fantasy sort of America, with Victorian era clothing, 20s era cars, trolleys, yet quite a modern school of mind. So, I have nothing to do with boomerangs, nor do I barely see a kangaroo. Can I just point out something? Well, for starters, you can't be married until you are sixteen, with parental permission, and over 18 means you can get married without a parent or gaurdian's signature. That's the law in Aust, well it is in the NT. Besides, I remember in LSUA, that someone sent a letter to Jacques saying, that this child shows really good skills for a VFD member. Or something like that, and it shows a few pictures of him (the child they are after). I remember seeing a bridge in the background. Quite unmistakably the Golden Gate Bridge in NY. Check it out, prove me wrong. I think that Handlder is just trying to put us off the scent. And they picked an Australian girl to play Violet in the ASOUE movie. Hmm, I'm confused. But then we have the problem of the outfits. Possibility eccentric, have you ever heard of umm, I'm not sure what they call them, where groups of people get together and reneact stages in history. People dress up differently, they learn who to cook the primitive way. One of my realtive's, his wife acts in the medieval times. When we where down there for xmas a few years ago, she showed me her bow, and her beautiful gown that she made herself. She said that they have fake swords and stuff and have wars, har! And you get bruises to! That is always a possibilty. There are sooo many posibilities. *Shrugs* I don't really know where to start.

Um I don't think it is set in Australia either because in EE it says Violet set the oven 500 degrees Farenheit.
And in Australia we use celcius not farenheit...

So who where they after then? Lemony? Or just an ordinary volunteer?

Thanks for pointing that out. So who where they after then? Lemony? Or just an ordinary volunteer? I don't know, but if you look up "Handler, Daniel" in the index, it points to that page. And, since I've started typing now, let me explain my view. In the context of the book, that letter was written from Daniel Handler (who is a volunteer, as the Building Committee transcript shows). In real life, however, those may be pictures of Handler as a child, and I agree with Snicketfires's theory that it's a homage to his childhood.
