Okay then. Now look back in your Carnivorous Carnival book, and on page 141, and the Baudelaires say, "Let's calm down, " Violet said. "Remember the time we watched a scary movie when our parents were out for the evening, and we were jumpy for the rest of the night? Everytime we heard a noise we thought vampires were breaking into the house to take us away." "Maybe somebody WAS breaking into the house to take us away, " Klaus said. Now when it says vampires, I was just thinking about that movie that Gustav Sebald made called, "Vampires in the Retirement Community" and he could've been sending the Bauds some sort of message, like really, somebody was breaking into their house to get something. If you have any ideas, discuss.

Gustav Sebald made all those films whose titles are formatted "[frightening creatures]in the[place that sounds semi-ludicrous]". All of them, I suppose, were intended as VFD code messages. It's possible that Vampires in the Retirement Community was a warning to the Baudelaire parents originally, but it was probably not a message to the children. Considering how long it takes to produce movies, Gustav's plans of hiding coded messages in movies seems to border on implausible, but maybe in Snicket's world movie productions take at most a few weeks(because with old-fashioned filmmaking there's no need for special FX production and all that jazz). See, another person replied.

Start the car I know a whoopee spot where the gin is cold and the piano's hot it's just a noisy hall, where there's a nightly brawl and all that jazzzzSorry, first thing that stood out when I read that. Anyway, to make this a non-pointless post, I don't THINK it'd be any relevence. Perhaps it's just a film...though the Gustav Selbald theory does send what I'm saying slightly ajar...

Perhaps the film was telling the parents that they had to attened a VFD meeting and that is why they left.

I think Sebald's movies are probably on the hastily-made side, and that they are made for the purpose of sending messages to various members of VFD (like Zombies in the Snow was sending a message to Monty that he probably didnt recieve). It is interesting that you point out the vampire film, because that is another detail I did not notice. I dont think people were breaking into the house (even I used to get paranoid after scary movies when I was little), but I do think a message was intended for the Baudelaire parents to recieve.
Interesting research, huh? ^_^

He could have been. I have a theory which links loosely into this. Maybe I'll say it sometime. But not in this thread.

I still say the movie was an anouncment for a VFD meeting the parents needed to get to.
