I apologise if this topic has already been discussed.
In the Carnival, Olaf had been told by Madame(?) Lulu (Olivia) that the Baudelaires were in disguise. There is a readymade excuse to get rid of the older Baudelaires.
In only putting Beverly and Elliot's (Violet & Klaus) names in the box, he makes sure that they get killed, then kidnaps Chabo (Sunny). Olaf's backup plan would've been Olaf hitching the caravan to the car (with Sunny in the front) and cutting the rope attaching them to let them fall to their (supposed) death.
Discuss.

Well, yes, that seems entirely plausible.

I never really thought about it, but yes, it does make sense.
Though Esmé's plan to throw Olivia in probably screwed up Olaf's plan. Perhaps he hadn't told her that it was the Baudelaires in disguise?

Yeah. Then again, there hadn't been much time to, with the mob, Geraldine Julienne, etc.

Though, why couldn't Olivia have been thrown in if there was a backup plan for the Baudelaires anyway?
It would have been another V.F.D. member taken care of (even though she did end up in the pit eventually). But, it's still a good theory.

Cos Olaf still had use for her? It was Esmé who wanted to kill her, cos she was jealous of her.

I suppose so. And, now that I think of it, Olaf didn't know that Olivia was in V.F.D.

If Olaf ever knew Olivia, I don't think he ever made the connection between her and Madame Lulu. Although it is implied that they once had some kind of relationship, or that she at least had a crush on him. (And of course, that's why Esmé wanted her killed - jealousy.)
And Olaf apparently only got told by Lulu that Beverly and Elliot were Violet and Klaus right before the whole lion pit act, so I don't think he'd have had time to tell Esmé about that. I don't think it really makes all that much difference, though; he was still able to come up with a plan to get rid of the elder two Baudelaires without too much difficulty.

Hmm..... Come to think of it, did the book say anything about the number of papers he put into the raffle box? (I say raffle box, because I cannot recall what happened in book 9 anymore to a T, and I haven't re-read the books in ages!) DID he put pieces into a raffle box/hat/whatever?
This is a very good theory, Shelly.

It was a sealed box which the powder-faced women were holding onto, I think. I don't recall any papers being shown to be put in it or anything. There might just have been the one piece of paper that had nothing written on it.

That'd look too fishy. What if someone saw the side that was supposed to be written on? They'd know Olaf was lying.
He MAY have written "Beverly and Elliot" on the scrap, or he may have written "Violet and Klaus" on the scrap, in case anyone else DID see the written side, and they'd know the Baudelaires were in disguise. But, judging the usual lack of intelligence with adults in the series, I highly doubt anyone would check. Anyone else want to comment about this?

I don't recall any papers being shown to be put in it or anything. No, there wasn't actually something like that mentioned. The Box pretty much appeared. This is a very good theory, Shelly. Why, thank you. (I hope no one thinks I'm a freak when I say this, but) I listen to the audio when I go to sleep, so I kinda pick up on things like that.

Part of me thinks that Olaf knew who the Baudelaires were the moment they entered Lulu's tent in the beginning of the story. Olaf is probably the only adult in the entire series who is always alert and thinking. So he probably was not fooled by their disguises, just like in TPP where he knew who they were when they met in the lobby.
Also: why did Olaf buy the lions then? Why would he spend money (which he lurves!!!) on something so stupid as to get people to go to the carnival. Olivia was already telling his fortunes and feeding his troupe...why would he need to help her out more?

I don't think he bought the lions. He would've stolen them.
