At New York City today (Sunday), there was a festival called New York is Book Country featuring many writers and illustrators. Brett Helquist was there!
He is SO nice. He was autographing books, and I had left Grim Grotto in the car, and he was nice enough to sign this piece of paper I had and gave me an address to send the book to so he could sign it.
I also asked him if he could tell me anything about book 12. He said he didn't know anything until a few months before the book came out.
If any of you care, some more people at the festival were R.L. Stine, Julie Andrews, and Francine Pascal.

Does he look anything like some of his pictures in the back of the ASOUE books?
Did you get a picture with him?

Brett Helquist is an old friend of mine (we taught English in Taiwan together). I totally agree. A VERY nice guy. I visited him in New York (totally cool original Count Olaf art in his apartment!) and he signed my son's book (the bad beginning). Of course, now, my son who is almost 11, and who is very artisitc, wants to head out east to meet him so we'll be trying to visit him this spring. I keep reminding my son that he's a very lucky boy.
Anyway, just wanted to let you all know that Brett really is a great guy! If I ever get around to it I'll have to find and post photos we took together in Taiwan around 1989 (his photos on his Shannon site look just like he looked as of 2001, btw).

Woah, seriously? So if we thought of some questions or designed some fan art for Brett you could make sure he'd receive/answer everything? I'll at least ask him. It all depends on how busy he is. I haven't talked to him in a long while so I don't know if he has the time. Why don't I ask him first and let you know? As of 2002 he was fully unaware that anyone knew who he was (obviously he's busy with his art). He thought it was funny when I told him he had a web following. (btw, I thought it was pretty cool when, without being asked, he printed out a pencil sketch of the carnivorous carnival cover only halfway complete when I paid him a visit. After I left his place and sat on the subway I wanted to pull it out and yell "see, people! I know the guy who drew this! yah! really! " but NYC citizens would not be amused by such antics so I just sat there thinking it was neat.)
