Dante, I'm going to change my name to Minniver Sussex Fox. Love it!
You can call me "Minnie" for short.

What if we went with the most memorable member and "Six Six Seven Forum"? And for the money we could get the richest member on here to bid for us. I like "Minniver Sussex Fox." ...If I had to choose a member name to send in, I'd choose Tragedy, since he created the forum. Although it's really up to whoever collects the money.

We would have to get an awful lot of us to put in some money though. Though I admit it would be freaking awesome up the pants if we won the auction. Maybe we could hold a contest or something here and the member who wins, we could use their name? Just a suggestion.

Although it's really up to whoever collects the money. I don't think people will want to contribute if they don't get input to the name. Also, if you are going to use PayPal, be aware that you have to register for an account and have to register a credit card or bank account linked to the account.

After what happened with the "members online record" double-failure, I have a hard time believing that people would follow through.
No one answered my question: What happens to the money sent in if we don't win the auction? Does anyone know? It would be a nightmare to refund a few dollars each to a hundred people!

I didn't want to mention the Users Online record, but that's a great example. It didn't even involve money, just showing up and we couldn't do it.
If people are really serious about this, someone should start a survey thread. Ask people to pledge how much money they would contribute. Auctions usually allow 7-10 days for payment. If we won, everybody would have to send their money right away to whoever is collecting it.

Let's say the bidding gets to $1,000. There is 4,000 members. If we get $1 from a quarter of the members we're there! It doesn't sound too hard but judging by the UOR it may not work.

The math looks good. Theoretically, we should be able to win it easily. It's all the coordination and commitment from people that makes it difficult.

Yes. In theory it's perfect, but in practice... not so good.

I don't think Handler would necessarily anagram the name. It doesn't say that does it? I was imagining he might use the name and then allude to what it means or make up a meaning. Hypothetical example: "We've finally made it to the Hotel Denouement", said Klaus. But with these hundreds of rooms, where should we look for Olaf first?", Violet asked. "sixsixsevenforum!", exclaimed Sunny, a word which here means "a place where fanatical people from around the world hang out to discuss the trials of the Baudelaire orphans." Except, he would be more clever and creative and grammatically correct. Edit: I would be willing to contribute around fifty dollars if I agreed with the name we would be choosing. I do not have a PayPal business account, just a regular account.

I'd be willing to contribute 10-20 dollars out of my own bank for this; I usually have that amount or more saved. However, my parents might not be entirely willing to go along with this. We'll wait and see.

I hate to be pessimistic (I guess that's a hazard of reading these books).
But let's say 1000 members pledge $1.00 each, and we win the auction. Then some people who have pledged don't actually pay (it happens all the time - ask the PBS or Muscular Dystrophy fund-raisers). The person who has the account would get stuck with the bill.

If people are really serious about this, someone should start a survey thread. Ask people to pledge how much money they would contribute. Auctions usually allow 7-10 days for payment. If we won, everybody would have to send their money right away to whoever is collecting it. Very true. Also, if you say you're going to send a certain amount of money in, you have to do it. Otherwise we're kind of...um...screwed. There's no, "Oh, I changed my mind," or "Well, my parents said I couldn't do it," sort of nonsense, because then someone else has to pay for your stupidity. And that's not going to happen. If you're unsure whether you'll be allowed to do it, for goodness' sake check before making a committment you can't keep. Oh, and another thing. With PayPal, there's no "refunding" involved...it's an online auction. Think back to TEE...the people bidding don't pay every time they offer a bid. Once you win, then you pay. Edit: oh, and if we create a thread, it should be "How much money are you going to donate," and should only include answers that are 100% certain. No "Maybe I can give twenty dollars or so..." sort of wishy-washy-ness. More of an, "I'm giving exactly 20 dollars." sort of thing. So that the total amount will be as accurate as possible, and we don't end up having to pay more than we can. Edit again: And Dear Dairy, your sig is stretching the page and it's kind of annoying. Do you think you could make it less wide?

I have 5 dollars. ;D But seriously, I could give like 20 dollars or more if I could. And who is the most trusted and responsible member here? We could give the money to them in their account.
Or what if we just got Tragedy to do it?
