I think it somehow has something to do with communication between members.

In THH Lemony says something about a sugar bowl, and I agree that it might be some form of communication.

I think it's used as a way of identifying VFD members.

I agree that it's something to do with communication between members of VFD. I don't see another reason why it could be so important.

Sorry about the messed up post, I accdently clicked reset. Anyway I agree with TheShinyEye that it's a way of identifying V.F.D members. It could explain why Esme was so upset about Beatrice stealing the sugar bowl. Maybe Esme was going to do something (no clue what) that involved people knowing/thinking that she was in V.F.D, and the plan was messed up because of it.

I dunno... In the index of the UA it says "see hiding places" next to "Sugar Bowl". It makes sense that they would hide something like a message in a sugar bowl. Then again, the index is a little confusing.

Well, the book is confusing. If you try to make sense of absolutely everything you'll break your head. But there are some thing's that you can piece together.
The index is really confusing... Things keep leading to "overall feeling of doom." But it has some interesting clues...

Does it ever actually end or does it just keep going around in circles? The index thing, I mean...

if you follow everything, it all leads to overall feeling of doom. but there are some very important connections made therein
