I was wondering what Vivez L'esprit meant, as it is the letterhead on Duchess R's letter to Lemony in Ch. 2 of the UA. I googled it, and the first hit I get is this: www.city.winnipeg.mb.ca/interhom/flash/flash.htm ...Which is a presentation of the province of Winnipeg. Near the end of the presentation, it says "Vivez L'esprit". Coincidence? Vivez L'esprit actually means "Embrace the Spirit". This is not the motto of Winnipeg ("Glorious and Free"), so why is it associated with the Winnipeg name? Discuss.

These language things depend on the various ways of interpreting the verbs, and how you interpret the phrase as a whole. "Vivez" I've only heard of meaning "live", and "live the spirit" and "glorious and free" have the same sort of effect to me, with the whole "live life to the fullest", "be free" sort of thing.
And where did it say that the Winnipeg motto is "Glorious and Free"? Top of a letter or something, or has it been too long since I read the U.A.?

Oh yeah... Thanks swans. I think I may have been doing two things at the same time when I read this thread, which would explain why I neither clicked the link nor payed any attention to the second sentence after the link. So, basically, my entire post was a waste of everybody's time. *adds to tally chart* But it's the thought that counts. Not that anyone cares. And cities and provences have mottoes? Stupid boring England. We barely even pay attention to different counties. On a hopefully more constructive note, I did Google searches for ""vivez l'esprit" Winnipeg" and ""embrace the spirit" Winnipeg", and the phrase is certainly closely tied in, although most of the the "embrace the spirit" ones used exactly the same piece of text. Then there's the small item in the bottom-right corner of the first page of this link: www.twu.ca/efcc/thepulsesum04.pdf...Which is about the Evangelical Free Church of Canada, but I think that is coincidental. I hoped to find information here: www.city.winnipeg.mb.ca/interhom/But couldn't find anything solid. In fact, it pretty much came up empty all the way through. There is definitely some kind of connection, because a lot of the sites had it in quote marks, or as part of a heading, but no explanation. Either it's some kind of unofficial motto, or it's a mysterious secret which the jealous Canadians don't think we should know.

I don't think it's any secret motto, but I'll have to check with Allison to see.
I wonder why these two things are so interwoven... Does DH have any special connection to Winnipeg?

I think Daniel Handler once said that he wanted the movie to be filmed in Winnipeg, because it's a creepy city. Perhaps he's been there and he likes the place. And of course, in the Snicket world we have the Duchess, friend and fellow VFDer of Lemony(the character).
