When they have a lock on them, then that means the topic has been locked, which means "closed."

I thought I'd post these here, in the images section, for those of you who are stuck with your avatar. Large Avatar Medium-Sized Avatar Signature Sized Banner. /\ I don't know if this one matters or not, but maybe if you want a a banner that isn't too big... And the small sized avatar is just 60 by 60. Coming soon.

I have tried to put up my own avatar and it just won't work. I've tried many times with different images and I just get the red X-box. What can I do?

Have you been using the img tags when trying to enter a URL into the avatar bar? Because you don't use them in that context.
Just a wild guess, which is probably so way-off that it's patronising.

No. I've only been typing the URL and it gives me nothing.

Can you show us the URLs of the images you were trying to use? They might be invalid, or forbid linking, or something.

If you copy and paste the entire URL, it should work.
If it doesn't work then, try hosting the picture on tinypic.com or another such site.

It's supposed to paste the link to the image between the img and /img tags, and then your picture should display. Make sure you don't accidentally copy something else after copying the URL of the image.
