You could have come up with so many more options then this, so I voted 'other' for Kevin Brooks. Plus there's lots of polls like this.

There goes my moral dilemma over whether to vote Rowling or Tolkien.
Ah, who am I kidding. I'm just here to criticise you.
I vote "Other" because that's the option which includes Melville and Kafka and Orwell and Catherine MacPhail and Garth Nix and many, many others.

Is Snicket included under "Handler"? Just curious, as they are two different entities. Kind of.
Shakespeare's Macbeth is quite possibly my favorite book of all time; however, I don't consider Shakespeare my favorite author. Same with ASOUE: I love it, but I don't really consider Snicket my favorite author (or Handler). I really don't know who my favorite author is. Perhaps it is Dickens; I rather enjoyed A Tale of Two Cities. But that's the only work of his I've read; I don't think I can name him my favorite author yet.
So, I haven't voted. I just don't know.

I voted for J.K. Rowling. I love the Harry Potter Series. <333 I do like David Clement-Davies, I am currently reading The Sight, I just reached Part II. Guardians of Ga'Hoole was a good Series, and the Call of The Wild was a marvelous work of literature. Snicket's books have earned second place, just below Harry Potter.

I must choose other, even though J.K. Rowling is a close second, and Snciket/Handler is a close 3rd. My favorite author is Douglas Adams.
