‘In which despite warnings, something that would qualify as "bad" happens.'
‘Michael! Michael!’ cried his mother, running towards the submarine.
‘Uh…young child, it’s dangerous!’ Snicket warned with a slight tone of concern in his voice. As he arrived at Amber Tee, he folded his arms and looked at the top of the submarine as Michael submerged further into the Queequeg.
‘Does this child never obey you?’ he asked her. Amber shrugged.
‘He’s a good child,’ she said. ‘He’s just very curious.’
‘I’m curious as to what he’s trying to do!’ cried James, pointing to the submarine, which was starting to shake as if an engine had been switched on.
‘Michael! No!’ cried Amber, running up to the submarine, and slamming her hands against the side. She turned to Snicket with a look of mercy on her face.
‘What’s he doing?’ she roared.
‘His curiosity is probably allowing him to push all the buttons in the Queequeg, Madam,’ Snicket said with a frown. ‘And it looks like he’s started it up…if it leaves the Briny Beach, it’s too battered to actually work.’
‘So…what will happen?’ Amber said, her face horrified.
‘He’ll be trapped in the Queequeg and probably have a slow death underwater,’ Snicket said calmly, with a shrug.
‘What?!’ Amber cried, her face filled with emotions. Her mouth was wide open, her nostrils were flared, her eyes were almost bulging out of her head. And without another word, she pushed Lemony Snicket back slightly and ran energetically over to the submarine, jumping onto the ladder and starting to climb in a peruse for her son, crying his name loudly and shouting for him to get out as she was about to get in.
‘No, don’t do that!’ Snicket, slightly less calmly then he had been speaking before. ‘Your weight will surely shift the Queequeg and knock it off the shore!’
‘Are you saying I’m fat?’ Amber cried angrily, and with that, she leapt into the hatch of the submarine.
As she landed on the hard metal floor of the Queequeg, everyone outside, watching from the beach could see it shake and lean towards the water. Waves started lapping up over the side of it as it leaned closer and closer into the sea. Seconds later, she rose her head out of the hatch again, just as a huge wave lapped over and splashed her. She spat the seawater out at Snicket and the other adults and children.
‘Get out at once!’ Snicket cried.
‘He can’t!’ Amber shrieked. ‘He’s stuck!’ There was a slight groan from the group of people outside the submarine as the Tee’s fate was coming clearer and clearer.
‘He’s stuck?’ Kimia asked quietly to her brother, who was watching the submarine enthusiastically. ‘How?’ James merely looked down at his sister and shrugged.
‘How is that awful child stuck?’ Snicket cried up to Amber Tee with a squint in his eyes.
‘He fell over!’ Amber cried. Snicket smiled. ‘And when he did, his leg got caught in some pipes!’
‘Is there blood?’ Snicket asked, being as curious about the situation as Michael Tee may have been in his shoes. Amber frowned.
‘A small bit,’ she said, watching the slight comfort on Snicket’s face. She shrugged down at the author, her eyes filling with tears as the submarine began rocking back furiously, as it finally left the beach slightly and started bobbing in only water.
‘What do I do?’ she cried.
‘Shouldn’t it be obvious?’ Snicket cried. ‘Get out at once!’
‘But what about my son?’ Amber cried back, taking Snicket’s idea in disgust.
‘Perhaps if he had been a kinder child, he wouldn’t have gotten himself into such a situation,’ Snicket said, looking tired.
‘So what, you just want me to leave him to his death?’ Amber screamed.
Snicket shrugged.
‘That’s what I would recommend, yes,’ he explained. Amber gave him a deadly glare and folded her arms and shook her head.
‘No!’ she cried. ‘I’ll not leave my son! In fact, I’ll go and save him now!’
‘Very well,’ Snicket said, as Amber began to clamber back into the Queequeg. He strolled up to the submarine and slammed the hatch down. ‘Enjoy your voyage.’
As Amber entered again, and her weight hit the floor of the submarine once more, the Queequeg shook violently, and tilted over away from the shore of the Briny Beach, until it simply turned over and splashed into the sea. There were two screams from inside the Queequeg, as it began to float out further into the sea, before beginning to slowly submerge into the dark and murky waters of the ocean. Amber and Michael Tee’s screams disappeared as the Queequeg did, until nothing more of the submarine could be seen, and the rest of the group were left looking out into the distance in silence.
‘Someone has to help them,’ Kimia murmured to James. Snicket apparently heard and turned towards her.
‘They got what they deserved, little girl’ he explained kindly.
‘They didn’t deserve to drown!’ Kimia said, as kindly as she could allow herself to. Snicket laughed.
‘Don’t be ridiculous!’ he cried. ‘I would really be more careful to make sure none of the tour party die!’
‘So…what WILL happen to them?’ Shruti rasped.
‘They’ll end up going where all the water does,’ Snicket explained. ‘Through the filter, and round the rest of the lakes and rivers in the factory, in a seemingly never-ending cycle.’
‘That’s stupid,’ Shruti grumbled.
‘Or very intelligent,’ Kimia said. ‘Think of all the water that’s being saved.’
‘Exactly,’ Lemony Snicket explained. ‘And I’ll send the n00bie-w00bies to wait at Lachrymose Lake until they arrive there.’
‘N00bie-woobies?’ Shruti said. ‘What the hell?’
‘They helped build the factory and help keep it running,’ Snicket explained. ‘You didn’t think I’d be able to do it all myself, did you?’
Shruti shrugged, and Snicket pulled a whistle from around his neck and blew on it loudly. Kimia held her hands to her ears, and saw that most other people did too, except for Derik who apparently couldn’t hear anything other then his loud music, and probably wasn’t paying attention.
‘What the potato is that?’ Shruti cried.
‘That is a signal for the n00bie-w00bies to come at once, little girl,’ Snicket said. He looked up at the back of the briny beach, as a trolley started to come from the distance. Everyone turned their heads and watched as the tram came nearer and nearer, and as it arrived, another one started coming. When they stopped, small little people in matching clothes started walked down towards the sea, as music seemed to start playing from nowhere. Kimia frowned, not sure what was going on or what she should be doing in this situation, but she guessed that the small people were the n00bie-w00bies, and she guessed that from the smile on Snicket’s face, the music was good.
Then she noticed that the n00bie-w00bies were doing synchronized steps, and hand movements, and then suddenly, they began to sing, doing actions to match the lyrics.
"If you were soon someday to meet
Young Michael Tee down in the street
The only things that he would say
Would be questions, questions, all the day
What? Which? Why? Where? How so? Who?
Would start the things he’ll say to you
So, Michael Tee, we give to you,
Some questions for you to answer to
What is it that makes you ask us things?
Which times should you quit?
Why are you such a vile brat?
Where d’you come up with it?
How do you get away with this?
Who do you think you are?
We’d like your answers soon please,
But we wonder where you are
But now, alas, you’re oh so wet
And drifting out where we’ll forget,
Perhaps to save you from despair
And we could simply leave you there
For curiosity killed the cat
Now Mike, what do you make of that?
We know that questions really please
So how about you answer these?
What is it that makes you ask us things?
Which times should you quit?
Why are you such a vile brat?
Where d’you come up with it?
How do you get away with this?
Who do you think you are?
We’d like your answers soon please,
But we wonder where you are
Tonight you’re getting damper
And sleeping with the fish
So don’t ask to many questions
And we’ll answer your simply wish;
To be freed from the harsh ocean
And to finally be free
But curiosity’s not rewarded
I’m sorry to tell you, Mike Tee"
As the n00bie-w00bies ended their song, and bowed, everyone clapped and looked very amused. Kimia gave a small cheer; she was perplexed about the n00bie-w00bies, but she enjoyed their performance, and as she looked around, she saw that it appeared most people had.
One n00bie-w00bie approached Snicket, who told him to take the others to Lake Lachrymose and wait for the Queequeg to arrive, so they could take it out of the water. The n00bie-w00bie nodded, and ran off to the others.
‘What were they?’ Shruti snapped.
‘They’re n00bie-w00bies,’ Snicket explained. ‘Straight from n00bie land.’
‘There’s such a place?’ Annelise Thomas giggled.
‘Of course,’ Snicket explained. ‘N00bs are supposed to be kept in confinement, but I found the n00bie-w00bies to be much more pleasant than your regular n00bs.’
‘Will we see them again?’ Kimia said. Snicket smiled and nodded.
‘I’m sure we will,’ he said quietly. ‘Now let’s stop standing here on a cold beach, and catch the trolley to our next destination.’
‘Where’s that?’ Philip asked.
‘It’s at a man named Montgomery Montgomery’s house,’ Snicket said, looking up at the clouds. ‘It’s a lovely place.’
‘I thought it was on fire!’ Pandora shrieked.
‘Well here at the factory, it’s viewed as before it was on fire,’ Snicket explained. ‘If everything that was just remains of a fire was shown that way, it wouldn’t be a very interesting tour. Now come along at once,’ he said, and all eleven of them began to walk towards a trolley at the back of Briny Beach, as Michael Tee, Amber Tee, and the Queequeg travelled further and further away.
‘In which despite warnings, something that would qualify as "bad" happens.'
