Why do people like smoking? Cigarettes smell like dirt and probably taste like it too. In fact, I'd say that eating dirt is more appetizing than smoking cigarettes. The thought of smoking a cigarette makes me want to choke. I guess it's not the grossest thing in the world but it's still kind of gross.

Some people actually like the smell of cigarette smoke. And nicotine is very addictive, so once you've had a few cigarettes you have a chance of ending up addicted.

Honestly? Because it makes you feel good, at least in the short term. I agree though, it's pretty disgusting. Nothing like waking up listening to someone hack up a lung every morning (my roomate, mm) to turn you off smoking forever.

Yeah, they're addictive. I think that nowadays people are becoming more aware that they're really bad for you though. But alot of the teens smoke just to be "cool".

There does seem to be an image aspect to it - smoking because it's seen as being cool, rebellious, or adult. And all the factors mentioned by others.
I read, or was told somewhere, that more teenage girls smoke than teenage boys (or some variant on that fact). I don't know if that was for everywhere, or just for Britain. I was reminded of this because, as I walked back to school after coming home for lunch, I walked past a group of girls who were all smoking.

I've heard that there are more women smokers than men smokers, in general. At my school, I've never seen anyone smoke, although I've heard about some students getting in trouble for carrying cigarettes.

I think smoking looks amazingly cool. I'm not sure why, I just think it looks good. I know the after effects aren't very nice, and I wouldn't be able to start smoking just because it looks cool but I can understand why some people do. Part of it might be elegance, everyone smoked fifty years ago and look at how gorgeous Audrey Hepburn is or Dianna Rigg.
I saw someone ranting on lj awhile ago and they were saying that they were tired of people treating them like they were disgusting just because the smoked. Not everyone smokes two packs a day and is coughing up a lung. She said that she asks people around her if she really wants a smoke otherwise she doesn't bother and she's really respectful about it but others aren't towards her. I think we consider why people start smoking, who would, and we they continue, but we don't actually consider the person enough. We think of smoking as vile and we can tend to make an unjust assumption towards someone just because they smoke.

Ugh, in my class, everyone smokes. Well, not literally, but a lot of people do. It sucks. Yeah, and people smoke because its cool, or they like the smell, or whatnot, and then they get addicted.

Yeah, apparently teen girls are likely to smoke then boys *looks around guiltily*. I've given up after four years. I find the smell repulsive now. Ever tried to kiss someone after they've had a smoke? - It's proberly worse then morning breath (eww) Besides, the smell really sticks to you, in your hair, on your clothes, on your hands - and it's not the best smell. Not just that - do you know how bad they are?People stress about - shock - myths like I'm gonna get breast cancer from my roll-on deoderant - that's not proven - but cancer from smoking ciggarettes does. It also makes your heart race - which, without any exercise, is a bad thing when your older. Don't bother with all of those chemicals - do something like acting, or presenting a speech at asembly - that will give you a jolt, not to mention the fact that it's fun, and you'll have good practise for when you need to get up onto stage to retreive your golden oscar.

I think the act is gross, I don't think it makes the person gross.
My mom smoked since long before I was born. Did I understandd that smoking was bad? Yes. Did I do my best to urge her to quit? Yes. Did I think any less of her because she smoked? Not at all. (for those wondering, she quit about 5 or 6 years ago)
The only time I find it really gross, is if I see it like I did the other day at the bus stop: A woman was smoking a cigarette, and between every puff, she'd have a huge coughing fit and sound like she was about to hack up a lung... but then she's just go back and take another puff. I mean, sure, I can understand why people would start, but you'd think when they're trying to smoke around their smoker's cough that they'd get a hint that they should stop.

I second Celinra in her whole post.
I like the smell of pipe smoke, but with my asthma, it makes it hard for me to breathe. People do it because they probably can't rely on people or other things when they are stressed or have a problem. I just don't get it.
