wasn't there a recent movie which was condemned for showing hitler as having a 'human side'? wtf? u know, hitler was a schizophrenic and suffered paranoia!? i don't see what that has to do with this, but I thought I'd add it. ;D Anywhos: People say that religion defines our culture and our culture is defined by our religion, and I agree with this. Everyone has different views on religion, and they choose to live by those views, whether they're christian, athiest, jews, hindu, budah, or whatever else, religion sets the way we live, and the way I see it, if we're living happily and not killing everyone who goes against us, it doesn't matter what religion you are, because as it's been said, we're all equal and therefore have equal rights in belief and religion.

basically what i mean is that if we're happy with the way we are and the way we live our lives, then it shouldn't matter what religion we are.

But I disagree. I suppose that, if your entire goal is an amicable world, that would work. But I believe in heaven/hell after death, and I think that one's religion has everything to do with where they go.

I believe in life after death, but I believe that whether you're christian or not, if you deserve an eternal happiness, you'll go onto heaven, but I don't really believe in hell. I don't know why. I believe that 'bad' people will get what they deserve after death, but I don't believe in a place called hell. It just seems too childish and make-believe to me.

That's because you're thinking of the childish, make-believe fire and brimstone Hollywood Hell. I don't believe in that either. Hell is "the absence of God." In medieval times, the only way priests could impress on uneducated peasants the seriousness of hell was to make it all physical (fire, torture, etc.). Really though, physical pain can be overcome. Mental anguish is much more difficult to deal with. The absence of God...complete and utter aloneness and lack of love...that scares me more than any amount of brimstone.

The lack of love scares me, ma'am, but I'm not terrified by the abscence of a god. I don't find the two interconnected.

Hell is "the absence of God." so we are all in hell already?

No, God is all around us, whether we choose to see him or not. And Soidanae, God does believe in you and loves you, even if that love is unrequited. God's love is the thing that brought us here, keeps us from hell, and guides us through our lives. He loves us all, even when we turn Him away. We can only go to hell when we turn away His offer of heaven.

I'd appreciate a definition of "turn away" in this case...

I'd appreciate a definition of "turn away" in this case... When you reject him. When you say "I don't like God" or, in some ways even worse, "I don't believe God exists", this is pushing him away, rejecting his offer of love and redemption.
