The atheism thread got me curious.

I said that I believe that God exists but I don't like the church.

I don't believe religion is a lot of crap. I just don't believe in God.

Ditto. I understand religion and accept it, but I don't follow it myself.

I wasn't raised with any specific religion, but currently I'm Neo-pagan. ( I think I'm the only one on this board, now that Kobo has left us...sob). My beliefs are somewhat vague, to tell the truth. I'm big on vagueness.

So to the previous 2 posts: How do you justify this? Could I hear a little more detailed explanation of how you seperate religion/God and why?

I believe in God, and I go to church.
Do I believe everything in the Bible? Nope. Do I believe anyone who doesn't believe in God will go to hell? Nope. Do I believe that we all have a choice? Hell yeah. And, do I respect other people's choices? I try to. Do I appreciate people shoving 'IF YOU DON'T CONVERT YOUR FRIENDS THEY'LL BURN IN THE FIREY PIT OF SAAAATTTAAAANNNN' down my throat? No, I don't. I wish that I could find a church that didn't do that every Sunday.

Though I believe the Bible totally (just not all translations), and I do believe that people who reject God are going to hell. And yeah, the whole "fiery pits of satan" thing is annoying. My church never does that, which is one reason why I love it.

I don't actually believe any of the Bible is completely true. I think there was a very enlightened man called Jesus who did good, but I don't believe he was anything more than a man. I agree with lots of his principles, the distinctions he made between right and wrong etc., but I think that most of them should be instilled in any basically decent person. I don't believe I need to rigidly follow Jesus and God to do right. I think I can do it on my own.

I agree with you somewhat, Whales. It's interesting to note that many of the Bible's stories have parallels in other cultures and mythologies.(One example is the Noah's Ark story, which is very similar to the Babylonian legend of Unapishtim. We read both stories last year in my literature class, and they have the same basic storyline and share a lot of details). So perhaps there's a kernel of truth to some of the Biblical legends.

So then, if the Bible's not completely true, who wrote it? Who decided to make Jesus appear divine if he was not?

His supporters. He may even have misled them into believing he was divine. I'm not suggesting he was a con-man, I just think it's entirely possible that he inspired people to believe he had actually done these things when they were only metaphors he used to explain his principles.

So all the stuff like God saying "This is my Son, in whom I am well pleased" is completely falsehood? I mean, Jesus couldn't fake that one. There were witnesses. So either somebody went back and added that, or it happened.

Right- it may have been an embellishment, designed to make everything Christ said more dramatic and more noticeable.
I agree with his message enough to say that that is not wrong.
Religion is a perfectly accpetable way to live and lead a life, and when taken with the right amount of salt it leads people to strong, morally correct and good lives. I think religion is a great and wonderful thing, and that all who follow it and live good lives ought to be applauded. I don't believe in the existence of an omnicisient (spelling?) being, but that doesn't stop me from believing that the Bible, the Torah, and the Koran, (any other holy books I've forgot, add in here...) are great lessons.
Religion isn;t only about God, to me...it's about living life in a certain manner, as describe din the various books and so on, and doesn't neccesarrily rely on a belief of God.
I can be an atheist and honor my parents, and not commit murder. There are Christians that do commit murder and dishonor their family.

i believe in god, but hate church. i hated when we had to do religion in primary school too. but i agree with Soidanae: religion isn't just about attending church and believing in a god, it's also about the way we live our lives and how we choose to live them. You could be a good christian, attend church, pray and donate to charities all the time, but at home you could beat your family, you could steal, kill, etc. and that is ultimately how you chose to live your life. so it doesn't matter whether you do church and that, it's just how you interpret what a good person is and how you take lessons of morals and how you carry them out.
