I just joined this forum so that I can ask a question that threatens to drive me insane if I don't find an answer.
A few years ago I read The Bad Beginning. I remember a scene in the story when the children are making pasta and sauce. Count Olaf's kitchen is extremely under furnished. They show their cleverness by using a window screen for a colander and a spittoon for a pot.
This morning I was reading a library copy of the same book to my daughter. That scene is missing entirely! They make the pasta and sauce, but it is only briefly described in the book.
Am I reading an abridged edition? There is no mention anywhere in the book of it being abridged. The copyright page says "First Edition".
Does this mean I am just crazy and dreamed the scene I remember reading?
Help!

I thought the scene you described is only in the movie... I could be wrong.

I've checked all my copies of TBB, and they're all the same - nothing like you describe. All my editions are relatively recent, though (in the sense that they were acquired some time after the original release in 1999). If Tragedy recalls the scene from the movie, could it possibly have been a movie novelisation of some kind? (Although, to my knowledge, the movie editions of the books are the same as the originals.)

Thank you. It seems that, sadly, I am just crazy. I do remember the scene from the movie, but I also distinctly remember reading it as well. Guess I saw the movie, then dreamed I read it? At least I know I am reading the "real" book.
