So I'm thinking about getting the ankle tattoo some time in the near future, and I was wondering which version of the tattoo is more highly recognized as the official sign of a VFD member. There's the one shown on Olaf's ankle in TBB--which looks more like an eye--and the one shown on Olaf's ankle in TSS--which looks more like the VFD symbol. So which will it be? I myself prefer the VFD version... Ignore the nasty feet, and excuse the nasty artwork on the ankle to the right. I would use the excuse that I am not an artist, but I am. Therefore my only defense is that I dislike drawing oval-shaped eyes and am more apt to draw a Simpsons-like eye.

The V.F.D. insignia probably wasn't invented until Handler wrote the U.A., so feel free to ignore any eye tattoo illustrations prior to that (i.e. prior to TCC). In fact, Helquist's never once drawn it accurately where it appears on someone's ankle, despite getting it right everywhere else after that. It's very strange, but I suppose it's artistic license.
Here's what I think is the closest you can get to canon: Inside left ankle, a bit higher than where you've drawn it, with the insignia as depicted in the illustrations for Chapters One and Five of TCC. Those ones depict the more eye-like version of the insignia which tends to be what Helquist's going for on Olaf's ankle in TSS and The End. However, the more "official" version of the insignia, as seen in the U.A. and on the odd document here and there, is also quite popular, and probably Handler's own work rather than Helquist's stylised depiction; I regard the U.A. version as being for official documentation only, but take your pick.
Short version: The left-hand image.

Hmm okay well thanks! I was thinking about the official document-type version of the insignia, but I also thought it was never really used as a tattoo. So instead I'm patching it on a bunch of my clothes Will post pics when I'm done...

I think the one on the left is the official V.F.D eye, after all, you can see the letters in it. You should get it a little higher up, then it;ll be perfect.

The V.F.D. symbol as a more offical tattoo.

I personally think you should go with the official V.F.D. insignia. And I agree that a little higher up would be the best way to go.

You're welcome! And the size is just perfect as far as my eyes can tell.

i think the size is good and a little higher up would make it look better and the left one looks better but i would get it more like the V.F.D symbol like with the curves in the V and the F and the D not so pronounced but more hidden in the symbol...but that's also my opinion and you should get what makes you happy

The thing is, the insignia is supposed to be on the inside of the left ankle, right? But you'd have to reverse it if you wanted it to face the right way. I'm still debating on it myself, which tattoo to get

Yes, you are quite right...for now I have decided I won't get it. I'd rather get this Black Books tattoo I've been thinking about.

The conclusion I've come to is that it mirrors the "direction" of the corresponding eye on your head.

I was considering getting a tattoo of the eye on my wrist, but I was considering a normal sort of eye like the one on the right in case I ever lose my love for ASOUE (gasp!) and then it isn't too specific. I will have to wait a few more years though, my parents wouldn't consent.
