The saddest book and the least favorite book can be different. For example, TVV is my least favorite but the saddest one for me is TE because of Olaf's and Kit's death. But I still like TE more than TVV, although TE is much sadder for me.

I think putting TBL on this poll would have been a good idea. Parts of that book are desperately sad. Otherwise, it must be a tie between TPP and The End, I think.

Hhahahaha, indeed. It would be sad to watch someone being forced to read that book. The Pony Party caught my eye in the book shop and I though it was some sort of parody of ASOUE. Later on I notice it was a fake cover

But which CANON book is the worst?

Both TE and TPP are really sad.

I voted for TE, just because Kit's death on the audiobook really got to me, because it was eerily reminiscent of the way I lost someone very close to me. Hearing Tim Curry's rendition of her final gasping breaths almost gave me an anxiety attack. However, this is not to say that TPP is any less heartbreaking; I would vote for both if I could, but in the end I chose TE.

The End. First time I cried while reading a book. Ever. It was heartbreaking to say goodbye to Violet, Klaus and Sunny after they had been in my life for so long. I read ASoUE through the course of a good four months so it was hard to know it was over.

It was hard for me to chose between TPP and TE but in the end I chose TPP because I had grown quite attached to Dewey, and I was thinking of Kit who just lost Dewey. It was all quite upsetting (though Kit's death was hard too, and Olaf's just not quite the same for me as Dewey's).

I feel one of the most amazing things Lemony does in the series is make us care about Dewey in the space of perhaps five pages, then even further in TE when he's connected to other characters (Kit and Ishmael, for example). I think you're right; that kind of characterization majorly adds to the sorrowfulness of TPP.

I chose TE, not for the ending, but for the part when Kit thinks that Dewey is alive and the Baudelaires don't say a word. It was heart-breaking.

You know, I think that Beatrice Letters ought to be there.

I agree, discosoup. I think it's considerably more powerful than The End, although that's because its plot has in its favour some advantages which The End doesn't have.

The sheer hopelessness of when the Baudelaires arrive at the headquarters in TSS has always got to me, but I think TPP wins out if only for Dewey's death.

I vote in TBB. Nothing can be more sad than the death of your parents.
