Due to the fact that some new members are rather clueless, we have established this information thread.
Rules
-Please do not double-post (make two posts next to each other in a thread), simply use the modify button to add to your post. Members often add “Edit:” before the text that they have added.
-If a thread already exists on a topic, do not create a new one about the same topic unless the previous one has been locked for age. Do not post in threads more than two or three pages back in a board unless you have a new idea or genuine contribution to make rather than a simple comment.
-Please make sure your thread goes into the right board. There is a description of each board on the homepage of 667 (with the exception of the sub-boards within Sardonic Series, which have their description there) which will aid you.
-A moderator retains the right to change the name of any thread in Burdensome Books, at any time, for the purposes of clarification.
Information
-A Series of Unfortunate Events (ASoUE or asoue) is written by Lemony Snicket, whose real name is Daniel Handler.
-There are 13 books in the series, with an indeterminate number of non-essential add-ons.
-The books in the series are:
1. The Bad Beginning (TBB);
Note: There is a second version available, known as The Bad Beginning: Rare Edition (TBB:RE). This rare edition has a different cover, comes with a photo of the cast of The Marvelous Marriage and has an extra chapter at the end, in which Lemony Snicket adds notes and clues to the things he has written in The Bad Beginning.
2. The Reptile Room (TRR);
3. The Wide Window (TWW);
4. The Miserable Mill (TMM);
5. The Austere Academy (TAA);
6. The Ersatz Elevator (TEE);
7. The Vile Village (TVV);
8. The Hostile Hospital (THH);
9. The Carnivorous Carnival (TCC);
10. The Slippery Slope (TSS);
11. The Grim Grotto (TGG);
12. The Penultimate Peril (TPP);
13. The End (TE or B13);
-Supplementary materials are:
14. The Unauthorized Autobiography (UA);
15. The Beatrice Letters (TBL);
-Add-ons that we know of are:
16. The Blank Book;
Note: This is merely a blank book with illustrations and quotations from the series, intended as a commonplace book.
17. The Notorious Notations;
Note: This is merely a blank book with illustrations and quotations from the series, intended as a journal.
18. The Puzzling Puzzles;
Note: This is an updated version of a similar book used to promote the ASoUE movie. It is a short puzzle book filled with difficult and confusing activities.
Note: If you are unsure where to talk about an as-yet-unreleased book, you could PM a Burdensome Books moderator and ask (see "Advice" below), or inquire in the Upcoming Books thread.
-"Ex Libris" is Latin for "From the Library of" and is simply the part of the book where you sign your name to indicate that it is your property.
-There is a movie about ASoUE, called Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. It is to be discussed in the Malignant Movie section, under Malignant Merchandise. Promotional books released with the movie should be discussed in Putrid Products, under Malignant Merchandise.
Advice
-We have already discussed ASoUE over and over, so if you discover something you think is new, and we already know of it, don’t be discouraged. We suggest you read through some threads so you get an idea what is already known, and what isn’t. Remember also to make good use of 667’s Search function to check whether your ideas are new or not. If you are unsure where a thread should be placed or whether it merits discussion, you should PM (Private Message) a moderator and ask their opinion.
-Try not to cite Wikipedia's articles on A Series of Unfortunate Events to back up your theories; anyone can edit Wikipedia, and as such it is often inaccurate, or contains unconfirmed theories that are no more valid than anything speculated on 667. Wherever possible, use only the evidence from the books themselves rather than from second-hand resources.
-Not every little thing in aSoUE is important. Some odd things may merely be jokes to the reader, and should not necessarily be over-analysed.
-If you have any queries that are not answered here, or are unsure about something to do with the Burdensome Books, you may send a PM containing your question to the current moderator (Dante (username: ffwf). Alternatively, any frequent poster in the Burdensome Books section may be happy to help you if you PM them.
-That is all.
