I don't have much time to submit many ideas at the moment, but I'd like to reserve a chapter before it's too late!
A few notes: - I suspect the chapters would be posted publicly, so readers could provide input and suggest ideas for the course of the stories. - Also, bear in mind the chapters in ASOUE are printed in a relatively large font, and aren't on a full 8.5 x 11 piece of paper (or A4 paper, etc.) so typed the chapter length wouldn't be so long. - When the story takes place: I imagine this won't be a crossover? If not, it's still possible to insert some supernatural elements in the story to reconcile the continuity issues Hermes raised. That is, if people were attached to writing post-TCC.

I would like to write a chapter as well, if there's room left.

There will always be slots left because if I have too many writers, I could split a chapter between two different people if it seems like it might be a big one.
Bryan, in terms of the turnaround in how long you'd have to write: I'd quite like this to be done before 667's anniversary in late June, so collectively we have a month and a half. Let's say each writer would have maybe half a week on average? But some people will write more quickly than that, and also I am not holding us to that anniversary deadline; it's more of an ideal to aim for.
Chapters will be posted publicly in this thread, I imagine, so every writer will know what was written before them, or else we'd have a hard time putting together a comprehensible story (although there won't be any overall plan to the story - we'll each have to figure it out for ourselves after the previous writer's entry). I'll be more than happy to give private advice to people while they're writing, though. Also, like I said, between chapters I'm hoping there will be potential cliffhangers and other material left in suspense that everyone can vote on.
Everyone seems to be pretty enthusiastic! I'll give it another day for potential sign-ups and ideas, and then I'll kick things into gear.

Oh, do count me in! I have a memoir to finish first, but it will be done by the 15ft of May, though. 1. When in ASoUE should the story take place? Why not near the conclusion of TGG? The Baudelaires are still in the Queequeg, on their way to Briney Beach. Olaf is faraway, but other dangers lurk on the sea and its surface... We could also try to cram in the infamous encounter with Female Finnish Pirates which Handler promised in TBB:RE. The same thing can be achieved just before the beginning of TE, when Olaf et the Baudelaires are "in the same boat" and have to work as a team (well, mostly) to survive. Of course the story would have to be sea-themed. If we try something more classic (that is, a "forgotten" installment of the first half of the series), I would prefer to place it between TEE and TVV. Esmé and the Quagmires can make an appearance and at this point the VFD plot has kicked in. 2. What kind of region should the story take place in? Random ideas: * A movie theater or a movie studio (expect a lot of Gustav Sebald references). I already have references to Plato's Cave worked out ! * A swamp ; an unpleasant and dangerous place, fun for all kinds of adventures and chase scenes. It turns out that it's where the Quagmires' household (awful pun, I know) was originally located. * A cruiseship. Filled with excentric characters and stowaways, it's also a locked location, which makes the presence of any villain onboard all the more daunting. 3. Can you provide a name for a new character in the story? * Professor Wordsworth, a scholar only speaking in iambic pentameters. (references: William Wordsworth) * Charlotte, Ann and Emily. (references: the Brontë sisters) A grandmother, a mother and a daughter. They're compared to the three crones of Greek Legends who spin, saw and cut the thread of life. * Mr Horla, a sinister character whom people always seem to forget for a reason (references : Guy de Maupassant's The Horla) 4. Can you come up with a random object to be involved with the plot? * A stethoscope (quite useful to hear vibrations in the wall and track movements, but also to hear conversations). * A vacuum cleaner * A tuba

We could also try to cram in the infamous encounter with Female Finnish Pirates which Handler promised in TBB:RE. But V met them on her third visit to Briny Beach. (Unless she didn't, of course. L actually says he doesn't know if this story is true, so he might have got it a bit garbled, I guess.) Oo, yes, that would work! And there isn't a deadline in this. Indeed a bit of a delay - to allow Kit's pregnancy to progress, and her adventures on the Queequeg to take place - might be a good thing. Oh yes, I really like this idea.

That actually gives us thirteen writers, but like I said, people can still sign up and I will find ways to include you.

Ideas-
1. I really like Terry Craig's idea of having the story take place after TVV, right after the Baudelaires officially become "homeless." I also like thedotororwell's idea of after TPP. 2. Aside from the brilliant locations already mentioned, how about something we don't see much in the books? Somewhere like the Vineyard of Fragrant Grapes/Drapes or Valorous Farms Dairy or Hotel Preludio? I like the idea of having it take place on a ship also; the Prospero maybe? Then you could have a titanic-esque sinking. 3. Daniel Handler's long lost brother, Dante? 4. Some kind of poisoned food?

By the way, I'm really enjoying all of the ideas people have contributed! Nearly any of them would make a good story, but we can only make one story here (for now). I think I'll set a personal deadline of having Chapter One written no later than Saturday - but there's something else I want to sort out first.

I actually don't have much to contribute right now, it I just want to say that I like the idea of having a sinking boat scene. The movie theatre/studio setting would be interesting too, since it could, in a sense, provide multiple settings.
Unless you've already decided on something, that is.

So to be clear, Bryan, are you signing up as a writer or avoiding it? I'd like to have you on-board and I can arrange for you to have a slot at a time convenient to you. But even if you aren't planning on participating as a writer, I do value your ideas.

I started a fic recently, but I don't think it'll work. So I will add my idea. I'm not sure if it will work but here it is: The Baudelaires go and live with a rich guardian who cares about being ladylike etc. ("No Violet, a woman should only sew and knit, not inventing.") Later, the guardian wants to find a suitable husband for Violet. Olaf comes and charms the guardian. Actually, it seems terrible to me.

Aside from the "suitable husband" part - Violet is still not of age, and even though there are loopholes allowing it, I think Mr. Poe would for once agree to remove the Baudelaires from their guardian if this came up - then this actually sounds like a pretty good idea. Like Esmé if she were around more. A lot like Esmé, actually, with "ladylike" replacing "in." Edit: Also, I've contracted somebody to write something short to start us off, which might delay my chapter a little. Hopefully not, though.
