Maybe you made predictions in the book as you were going along. Or maybe you read the four chapters released early over and over and came to various conclusions. This thread is basically to ask what you guessed before it was revealed and what you were right about. It should give us a better idea of how the clues in the book worked and how good we are at playing the role of detective.
So, what were you right about? Or even, what were you wrong about?

Well, I guessed the butler was important,

There was always a case to be argued that Snicket wouldn't be able to resist the opportunity to use the infamous "the butler did it" line.

There was always a case to be argued that Snicket wouldn't be able to resist the opportunity to use the infamous "the butler did it" line. For that reason I also suspected the butler-- and because Mr. How Can We Stop Him? looks rather like a stereotypical butler.

I guessed that the girl waiting at the station was Kit, but that was on the basis of information from the Educators Guide, which makes it clear that Kit comes into the story somewhere - so that may count as cheating.
I guessed - as I think everyone did - that the BB was not really stolen (indeed, that was said almost explicitly) - and that Mrs Sallis had in effect hired Theodora to steal it; that is also strongly suggested by the emphasis on returning it to its rightful owner. I also guessed that Mrs Sallis was Sally Murphy.
Although Lemony said he should have taken more note of the butler, I forgot about that almost immediately.

Hm, well I had guessed that the beast wasn't stolen, but that Mrs. Sallis only wanted. She said she hadn't been in the room in a long time, but if you have something very valuble, are you not going to keep your eyes on it? Thats what made me think it wasn't hers to begin with.

Rereading Chapter Three is enlightening. Every single thing Mrs. Sallis says and does is a clue.

Well someone let slip early that Hector and Kit were to be in it, so I spent the whole time accusing characters of being Kit/Hector in disguise. Also I guessed that the BB was hollow (who didn't). And that Dashiell was the watcher, or whatever they were called

I guessed that the butler is the villain - that was easy.
And I guessed that the girl in the city is Kit, but I didn't remember that Kit was mentioned in the Educators Guide, which I think I didn't even look at or if I did it was a short look without switching the brain on.
And I guessed that Mrs. Sallis was Sally Murphy when I read chapter for, but I knew it when I re-read chapter three and noticed the sentence "Then, with a great sigh, !as if preparing herself for an important performance!, Mrs. Sallis looked at Theodora and began to speak". I also guessed then that she was payed or forced to do that and not interested in the statue herself.
So, you see, the obvious things that everybody guessed...

I guessed Ellington would try to double cross Lemony at Handkerchief Heights. And as I was reading about "she," I became more taken to the idea of "her" being Kit.
I also guessed Qwerty was leading Lemony to clues by directing him to the theater section.
And I guessed the "C" in the Black Cat Coffee Shop would stand for "Coffee."
Guesses that amounted to nothing: - Prosper Lost would turn out to be a villain, flunked out of V.F.D. training school - Stew would turn out to be an accomplice of Hangfire's, or perhaps his apprentice - Sebald Code would appear when a bell rang - The "A" in the Black Cat Coffee Shop would stand for "Armaments" - The "B" in the Black Cat Coffee Shop would stand for "Black cat" - Ink Inc. would feature in the story - In general, the absence of ink in the community would play a larger role than it did - At 1300 Blotted Boulevard, Lemony would be kidnapped and have to think his way out of his imprisonment - Ellington escaped to Killdeer Fields (or rather Lemony would speculate about this aloud)

I was disappointed by the lack of any Sebald code at any bell ringing. Not even one message. Yes, it seems Hangfire is a non-confrontational villain, leading people away, rather than leading them into traps.

Oh yes, I missed the Sebald code too, there were so many bells but no message.

I just can't wait for one moment in one book where the salt-lung bell tolls, and then Sebald Code ensues. What of the six doorbell rings?

I wondered about the six rings as well. A tic of Theadora's?
I thought of two more correct guesses: That Lemony had chosen the lowest-ranking chaperone to pursue an independent investigation, and, much longer ago, that the first book would be released Fall 2012.

I wondered about the six rings as well. A tic of Theadora's? Or a VFD trait. Have we ever seen a member of VFD ring a doorbell before now?
