So, who are your favourite characters in Who Could That Be at This Hour? and why? For me, it's a tie between Qwerty and Ellington.

I really like all of them, but Hangfire wins this one for being so much more than I was expecting.

I'd choose Ellington as my absolute favorite-- she's mysterious, sneaky, and treacherous, but also quite sympathetic. After all, she wants to save her father at probably great risk to herself, even if she's also likely putting others at risk. She also seems to have conflicting feelings toward Lemony; neither of them really trusts the other, but they show signs of a blossoming friendship.
Qwerty, second place-- he's enigmatic and stoic and has some great lines. I like how it's never quite clear whether he understands what Lemony's up to, but I suspect him of being the VFD watcher.
I also voted for Hangfire because he's so impressively characterized as a monster. I'd say he's even scarier than the Sinister Duo, because of his monomaniacal desire for the statue and what he's willing to do toward that end.

I liked Ms. S. Theodora Markson, but I liked the way she was. It was like she was always trying to be official business-like, but it wasn't really her personality.
And Querty was cool, because I couldn't really deduce much about him. I felt he was either a watcher, who knew exactly what was going on, or he was a really smart guy who figured out what Lemony was up to.
However, I didn't really like Moxie at all. I thought she was really annoying, but then I remembered that she was a journalist, and thats the way they are .I don't know, I just thought she was always there even when she didn't need to be.

Qwerty is my absolute favorite. His attitude, mannerisms, and quotations remind me so much of V.F.D. He's also perfect as a librarian, as historically people in that occupation serve as the stoic, unbiased servers to the community Qwerty embodies so well. Edit: I should add a caveat to that last statement, as Qwerty isn't always stoic and unbiased. Recall his reaction to Stew's antagonism.
Moxie is number two. I really admire her style; her penchant for asking questions and searching for the truth is representative of the inquisitiveness Snicket tries to instill in his readers. She is also most informed about the town, and she has a past that intrigues me.
Lemony Snicket gets his own category. It's at once strange and enlightening to read a narrative told about him as well as by him. I'm interested in a few things here: First, where we can see the older, world-weary Snicket from the ASOUE books. There's one line that somewhat addresses this - that for all the fear he had put aside, Lemony thought he would be scared for the rest of his life - and of course the "word which here means" tic all the reviews keep citing. Second, that even though we are in Lemony's past, Lemony still has a past. Will we find out more about his in-school training? And third, what does the information here reveal about what we read about Lemony in ASOUE? So, L has earned Favorite Character status as well.

Moxie is number two. [...] she has a past that intrigues me. Since this is a character discussion thread, I figure I'll just point out something here that affected me too. I felt more awkward than I expected to as the book went on and it became increasingly clear that Mr. Mallahan has something like clinical depression. He never leaves the house, never even gets dressed, his daughter's been handling all of his letters for months... when you think about what he once was, it's a very sad picture.

I'll retitle this thread; the poll question is still there.
Ms. Mallahan is intriguing, and I hope we learn more about her and her back story. We know her absence is upsetting to Moxie, and it's probably also the major reason for Mr. Mallahan's depression. Her portrait isn't even hanging in the living room- it's apparent she's been completely cut off from her family.

I like: Moxie for her journalistic spirit. Pip and Squeak for their entrepreneurial (but not money-seeking) attitude, and their love of books. Qwerty because - well, he's an excellent librarian, and embodies the spirit of VFD (whether he's actually a member of not).

I like Ellington, because we can't really see what she is going to do, except saving her father. She seems not to be anything like evil, but she wants to do anything to get her father back. That's why she reminds me of Fiona, who also does things she doesn't want to do because she wants her family to be reunited. And I like Qwerty because sub-librarians are cool He seems to know everything and doesn't tell and still tries to help silently (like recommending to read something about Sally Murphy) And Theodora because she's so stupid and thinks she isn't. I love stupid people, especially in books or films.
