I know people have been harsh on the film, which is understandable. I was quite disappointed with it the first time I saw it too, as it didn't really follow the books that closely. IMHO. But for what it is, even as a stand-alone type of film (which I think of it as) it was pretty good. I actually own the film. But one thing, (and I don't know if this has already been discussed) I really loved and thought I should mention are the costume designs for this film. I'm pretty big on paying attention to wardrobe detail in film, and I'm a fan of movie costumes in general. And I personally loved the designs in this film. I love Colleen Atwood's style, and I've been a fan of her work for quite some time. She was even nominated for an Academy Award (Oscar) for this film for Best Costume Design! I especially loved Count Olaf's green/black overcoat and fur collar that he wears with the sunglasses when he brings his troupe home.
What did everyone else think of Ms. Atwood's creations?

The costumes were epic.

I think people generally adore the film's visuals, if nothing else. They got that aspect of the film pretty much spot-on.

The ASOUE movie costumes are very gothic (although historically incorrect, but who cares.) and awesome!

But isn't that kind of the point? After all, the series takes place in a very timeless era; where everything is mixed up in a very alternate universe. So it makes sense that everything would be "historically inaccurate" since everything about the world of Snicket is one big hodgepodge of anachronisms.

I think it's more that the Snicket world is so anachronistic that to describe something in it as "historically incorrect" is impossible because there is no standard of historical correctness.

The cinematography was also really great, and I like that they shot most of the film in a set, it creates a very moody, gothic atmosphere. EDIT: Ah, one thing! I disliked Violet's costume, because it seemed too steampunky and kinda ridiculous, compared to Helquist's simpler idea of her outfit. But aside from that I really liked the costumes.

Violet's costume (Sunny's too, I think?) was certainly a bit elaborate compared to Klaus's. Somewhat ironically, I feel that Helquist's Klaus costume fitted in better with the movie Violet and Sunny costumes, and vice-versa.

I also think that the costumes are good because they don't fit in any time of our world. And I always feel like there is something wrong with Violet's outfit, I never could tell what, but probably it's like Terry Craig and Dante said.

The head bandage makes me think of Marley, the first ghost from Dickens' A Christmas Carol, or how people had kerchiefs wrapped around their chin/head when they had a toothache in the olden days.
