This strange thing appears on the cover of ?2, When Did You See Her Last? Significantly, or perhaps insignificantly, it occupies the same slot that the Bombinating Beast did on the cover of ?1. What is it? Please share your predictions. The ideas mentioned in the poll are all ones I've heard mentioned.

It looks like a frog before it becomes a frog. (Sorry, I don't know the English word.) But that would be boring.
I think a baby octopus would have more arms?

Yes, it does look like a tadpole.
I don't think it can be the spawn of the Bombinating Beast, because if the BB is the Great Unknown, it ought to remain uncertain whether it really is a beast.

The most plausible identity, I think, is that it's a leech-- that "eyeball" could be interpreted as a mouth. But I'm sure it will be compared to the Great Unknown (directly or indirectly) regardless of its real identity.
Whatever it is, I find it to be the most interesting aspect of ?2's cover, and I've nicknamed it the "inkling."

I entirely approve of the above post. I particularly like the cleverness of the reinterpretation of the apparent eye as a mouth; also, attempts to tame leeches have been mentioned in ?1, in relation to a certain other friend of Lemony's. Could that character make a guest appearance in Stain'd in ?2?
As for the term "inkling," I'd be disappointed if it didn't show up in canon sometime.

From the looks alone it does appear to be the spawn of the Bombinating Beast: it has one pointy, curly tail, and it is black. Either that, or something we don't know about yet (which I've voted for here). Maybe a scientist is trying to clone the DNA of the remnants of the BB, kinda like the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park (just an idea to throw out there). But it doesn't really look like a leech --neither a real one nor the ASoUE ones-- except if, like Sherry Ann said, the "eye" is a mouth, altough I think Seth would draw its teeth differently. The baby octopus option doesn't make sense beyond the fact that octopi play a significant role in the series, because it doesn't look like any kind of octopus. I also agree with it looking a lot like a tadpole (which maybe should be included in the options), even though there was no mention of tadpoles or frogs in the series yet.

...it looks like an eyeball to me. But that's coming from someone that's completely uninformed about the new series still.

I think the inherent ambiguity of its placement and visual rendition are suggestive of its role in the story, if not its identity. The fact it appears on the cover at all, of course, alerts us to its importance, but also to its mysteriousness. In that way, it is appropriate that the creature should appear in the same place as the Bombinating Beast in WCTBATH - we weren't quite sure whether that was a seahorse, dragon, or another creature entirely - and in fact, almost all the elements on the cover of WDYSHL correspond in some way to those panels on WCTBATH. That said, I agree with the "leech" interpretation, but I think its reminiscence of an eye is also significant. Perhaps the villain is breeding a pet, as Terry suggests, or perhaps the V.F.D. "eye" motif will feature more prominently in this installment than in the last.
