I've always wondered..Did the Baudelaire parents have the tattoo? Because I read somewhere that they did but in Lemony Snicket the Unauthorized Biography it said that after the schism members did not have to get one..So if the parents did, how come none of the children ever noticed it? Same with the Quagmire parents..

It's a problem, isn't it? Similarly, in one of the books the Baudelaires state flat-out that none of the troupe members have the tattoo, even though there's no way they've seen all their ankles. Logically, as apparent members of Lemony and Olaf's age group, the Baudelaire parents should have the tattoo, but it seems unlikely they could've covered it up with socks or make-up for their children's entire lives. I suppose we must suggest that Lemony and his siblings were some of the very last neophytes to receive the tattoo, with Beatrice and Bertrand either being slightly younger, or recruited slightly later. It's a bit of a hash, but the best we can do.

I suppose that while it could go either way, it is most likely they didn't have a tattoo, otherwise the children would have seen it (as you said). Of course it's still possible, because Jacques was around the same age as the Baudelaire parents and he had a tattoo, but it seems like only the more devoted members that didn't have distractions like children would still follow the practice.

It's stated somewhere that the volunteers stopped using tattoos when the schism rendered them irrelevant. Beatrice and Bertrand may have been part of that movement.

The reasoon they stopped was they realized that it was unwise to permanitly mark yourself with a symbol. When the symbols meaning can change at any time

Thank you for that reminder, Ernist. This is a very pertinent issue in ASoUE, when the Baudelaires must of course first assume that the eye insignia has a very sinister meaning because it's associated with a very sinister person. People, too, of course, change.

I think they just joined VFD later, after the schism, so they didn't have one.
