Chapter 4
Charlie was driving to the crime scene while Piper leafed through the case files. Charlie didn’t ask any questions about why she needed to see it again, or why they were going to the site, which she was grateful for. Piper liked Charlie so far, but telling him anything could cost her everything. Piper wasn’t very familiar with case files or how to read them, but from what she could tell this was a very minor case. Someone had reported a stolen watch, but there was no other relevant information. There was nothing about the assailant, or the victim. The entire file seemed like it was done quickly and with no effort. Something was off. Piper took out her phone and texted Bee, who was going to meet with Hermes later that day to talk. Sherry Ann’s phone went off in her purse. She took it out and read the text from the same anonymous number from earlier. “Stop ignoring me. We need to meet again,” it said. Charlie looked over at her suspiciously. “Why do you have two phones,” he asked. Piper stumbled. “Um, work phone and personal phone. It helps me stay organized.” Charlie shook her head, sensing another lie in a growing web of them. They drove to the most remote section of the city, where the crime had been reported. They got out of the car to look around.
“Hermes, Piper deserves a chance. It’s her daughter.” Bee and Hermes were having tea in Hermes’ living room. They were in the midst of an intense argument. Hermes stance remained firm. Piper would not be allowed to have her daughter until she had proven she was ready. “She left, Bee. For almost a year with zero contact. As of now, I have legal custody of her.” Hermes put his hand to his face and sighed. “Piper was always a handful, you know that as well as anyone. And I know that deep down she has good intentions. But this child is a treasure.” Bee looked Hermes in the eye. “Piper knows that,” she exclaimed. But Hermes shook his head. “She doesn’t.” Bee wasn’t backing down. “Can’t they at least meet? When you see them together again, you’ll see that she’s ready.” Hermes sat in silence for a moment. “Tomorrow evening, she can visit. But this is her last chance. I mean it.”
The alley Piper and Charlie were standing at was still completely abandoned. The two walked to opposite sides to explore. Charlie looked around puzzled. He had been mildly suspicious when Sherry Ann told him she was going out to investigate a minor crime by herself a few days earlier. She always saw the value in having backup, even in the most seemingly insignificant scenarios. When he had tried to ask her about it, she skimped on the details, rushing off without saying much. He had sensed something was wrong, but let it go. So of course when it ended up with a civilian being fatally shot, he felt overwhelming guilt. “I should have been there too,” he thought to himself in a nonstop loop for the next day. If something had happened to Sherry Ann, he would have never forgiven himself. He had also scoured through the police report and had helped Sherry Ann with her statement about the events. But things still weren’t adding up for him. He stood on the opposite side of the alleyway deep in thought when he noticed that Sherry Ann was talking to a man. Charlie hadn’t even noticed him arrive, but then the man started waving frantically at him. Charlie started to walk towards them.
Piper thought through the potential crime she was meant to be investigating. She knew something about petty theft, and while an area as vacant as this would make a good place for it, this place seemed almost too vacant. There was literally nothing here that would attract people. Piper got the feeling that there hadn’t even been a single person here since Sherry Ann was here a few days previous. Things weren’t making sense. After spending so much time thinking about how there were no people around, Piper looked up and was surprised to see a person walking towardsher. It took her a second to realize that it was a person she knew. “Hey, Piper,” said Tragedy sardonically. “So you faked your death? Thought you could get away from me?” He started laughing. Piper grabbed his arm. “What are you doing here? How the hell did you find me?” He chuckled again. “magee, I’ve been following you all day. What kind of scheme are you up to now? I know one thing; I’m not going to let you get away with it.” He looked over at Charlie. “Does he know who you really are? If I talked to him, would it blow everything for you?” Piper was silent but Tragedy heard everything he needed to hear from her panicked expression. “Hey you,” he yelled in Charlie’s direction and waved his arms. He stood close to Piper as Charlie walked closer. “salsa,” thought Piper. This was not going to end well. She was right. A sniper shot from the distance, hitting Tragedy in the head and killing him instantly. As his body hit the ground, Charlie and Piper both got down on the ground. “Get out of here, it’s not safe,” yelled Charlie, and the two ran off in opposite directions.
Piper ran away frenzied. She had witnessed an associate get murdered right in front of her, with a bullet that she suspected had been meant for her. Or to be precise, for Sherry Ann. She stopped for a second to catch her breath. A black car drove up to her, the same one she had seen earlier in the day. The window rolled down. “Sherry Ann, it’s me Rellim. What’s going on? Why haven’t you been answering my texts?” Piper looked at the woman in the car. She had a friendly smile and long hair. She was wearing doctor scrubs. But Piper was more interested in the fact that she also looked exactly like her. Piper made a quick decision to trust this stranger, because if you can’t trust somebody with your own face, who can you trust? “Sherry Ann is dead. My name is Piper. I was almost murdered about two minutes ago. Can you please tell me what the potato is going on?” Rellim looked shocked but interested. “So you’re another one? I wonder why my facial recognition software on driver’s licenses and other IDs didn’t find you.” Piper said frustrated, “Listen doc, I’m glad you’re finding this all so fascinating but I need to know what is happening.” Rellim apologized. “Oh dear, I’m sorry. It’s just always kind of cool when I meet a new clone.” The last word clone echoed in Piper’s head. “Clone,” she said doubtfully. She thought there must be a more plausible explanation. But Piper knew her own ticks and cues for lying, and she could tell that Rellim was telling the truth. “There’s a lot for me to explain to you, and clearly you’ve got a lot to tell me too. Get in.” Piper buckled her seatbelt. “So, how many of us are there,” she asked. Rellim smiled slyly. “Just one more around here. Brace yourself, because we’re going to go meet her now.”

Chapter 5
Emma took the pie that had been cooling on the window sill and sliced it. She put each piece onto a plate and brought it to the kitchen table where her husband, Sixteen was entertaining the neighbors. “Time for dessert,” said Emma cheerfully with a giant smile. “Emma, we’re so full after that delicious dinner,” said the neighbors. “Don’t worry, whatever you don’t eat, Sixteen will eat the leftovers for a midnight snack.” They all laughed heartily and Sixteen grinned. “You know me,” he said. After some after dinner tea and light conversation, Emma sent the guests home. “Sixteen darling, I need to take care of a few chores around here. Do you think you could take the kids to a movie this afternoon.” Sixteen nodded. “Of course. We can go see the new animated feature with talking animals. I’ve been waiting for it for months.” Emma waved at Sixteen and the kids as they drove off. When they were out of sight, she hastily waved in Rellim’s car, which had been parked a few houses over. Piper started to get out of the passenger seat, but Emma walked up and slammed the door shut. “What the potato is wrong with you two. Calling me in the middle of hosting my neighbors? Telling me that you’re right outside? Are you potato ing insane? I might expect this kind of carelessness from you, Rellim, but not from you, Sherry Ann. Get a hold of yourself.” Piper wasn’t about to let somebody talk down to her, especially from somebody who looked exactly like her. “Listen, suburban mom. Sherry Ann is dead. I’m another clone.” Emma cut her off. “Do not use the c word,” she exclaimed. Piper shot back, “Well, I need some answers.” Emma furrowed her brow, then gave a fake cheery smile. “Excuse me for one minute, please,” she said, and went to the driver side of the car. She whispered loudly to Rellim, “How do we know we can trust this girl? Isn’t it a bit suspicious that Sherry Ann died and she just shows up in her place?” Rellim, evertrusting, said, “C’mon, Emma. She seems nice. And she has access to police resources, so like it or not we still need her help.” Emma pondered this. She walked back over to Piper’s side of the car, and once again switched her face from angry to a big smile. “Okay, Piper. We can chat. But we can’t do it here, my husband and kids will be back soon.” Rellim shook her head. “My roommates are home right now.” Sherry Ann’s phone vibrated, and Piper checked it. “Hey SA. I’m off to the casino for the night. Don’t wait up,” she read out loud.
Charlie had gotten some other police officers to the scene as they cautiously investigated. He had sent somebody out to look for Sherry Ann as well, knowing how another shooting in two weeks had the potential to really shake her up. He traced the trajectory of where Tragedy was shot, and it led him to behind a dumpster across the way. He wished he had reacted better in the heat of the moment and not ran, but he had panicked. There was nothing he could do about that now. Charlie peeked behind the dumpster and saw a rifle. It was almost certainly the murder weapon. He called over another team member to help him bag it up and take it back to the lab. He also called in BANDIT from the morgue, to take Tragedy’s body. “I’m going to figure out what is happening,” Charlie said to himself.
Piper went into the kitchen to get some refreshments for her doppelganger guests. Rellim sat on the ground with her bench against the couch while Emma sat in a chair with her legs crossed. “I’ll start from the beginning,” said Emma. “A few months ago, I got a call from a stranger named Lemona. She was from Australia, and said it was urgent we meet. I was skeptical but the panic in her voice was real, so we met. As I’m sure you guessed, she looked exactly like me. Like us.” Emma paused for a second, so Rellim took over. “She found me too. She had some sort of program that could search ID databases for facial matches. She had found several of us. I’m not sure how she missed you.” Piper said, “I don’t have much of a paper trail.” Emma nodded than continued. “She told me I was a clone. We were a scientific experiment. She also told us that now someone was trying to kill us. They had killed clones in Australia and Europe. Obviously this was all a shock and I wasn’t sure what to believe. Until they killed her.” Rellim fought back tears as she took over for Emma. “Lemona had brought us all together. Sherry Ann as well. Unfortunately, she also brought the killer here too. Sherry Ann was with her when Lemona was murdered.” Piper put the pieces together in her head. That’s who Piper meeting with a few days earlier. That’s why she had been so secretive. She couldn’t let anybody else she her with an identical. And she realized that while the person had meant to kill Lemona, if they were killing all the clones, they also probably intended to kill Sherry Ann. Piper shared this insight with Emma and Rellim. “The circumstances are obviously not ideal, Piper. But it worked out well that you are still posing as Sherry Ann. We need you to keep investigating, and figure out who it is trying to kill us.” Piper thought about this for a moment. She was putting her life in danger by staying Sherry Ann. But if they didn’t discover who was killing them, all their lives would be in danger. “I’ll do it. I can get Charlie to help out.” Rellim cut in. “Um, you can use your partners help certainly, but obviously you can’t tell him anything about us. You can’t tell anybody about us. You haven’t, right?” Piper shook her head. “Of course not. Nobody else knows anything.” The door swung open and Bee barged in. “Piper, I’m coming over. Oh my God, this chick has a nice apartment.” She looked over to the couch. “WHAT THE potato !”
“Emma, Rellim, this is my sister Bee. She already knows a lot, there’s no harm in her learning more. BTW Bee, Tragedy’s dead.” They both shrugged. “Great, now I have two hoodlums in my life,” said Emma. “Cheers,” said Bee, making an obscene gesture when Emma looked away. “So here’s the plan. Tomorrow Rellim is going to a seminar led by a geneticist who is studying cloning. She’s going to see if she can find out anything that might be useful. And Piper, you have to be at the police station 24/7 finding out anything.” Bee put her hand up. “Um, tomorrow Piper has to meet with her daughter. It’s her last chance too.” Emma looked up, surprised to relate to Piper through parenthood. Piper was in shock, and began to tear up. “I can see my daughter,” she said hopefully. “No you can’t,” said Emma sternly. “This is for our safety, Piper. I’m sorry.” Piper was distraught, but she knew Emma was right. If they didn’t find out who was trying to kill them, they were all in danger, including her daughter. They sat stoically, until Bee broke the silence. “Excuse me? I hate to be a bother or anything but, don’t you all look alike? Emma, you’re not doing anything yet to help. Pretend to be Piper, and meet with her daughter to appease Hermes.” Emma huffed. This was beneath her. “I don’t have an accent. And I don’t know anything about Hermes or your daughter. They’ll see right through me, and then we’re in real trouble.” “I’ll train you,” said Bee enthusiastically. “This will be so fun!” Emma hesitated, but the look of sadness Piper gave her for potentially losing her daughter was too much. “Fine, I’ll help. Let’s go.” They all started off to do their tasks. “Wait, why doesn’t Emma just impersonate Sherry Ann and Piper goes to see her daughter herself? That seems like it would cause far less hijinks,” but it was too late, nobody heard her.

Chapter 6 “The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain,” said Emma, with an exaggerated Cockney accent. Bee sighed exasperated. “Were you even listening when Piper was talking, or did you think you were meant to be Eliza Doolittle?” “Shut up! I’m trying.” Then they went through the entire list of offensive British slang. “This is appalling! I would never speak like this,” said Emma. “Piper told me you were swearing like a sailor when you first met. I thought this part would come easy for you.” Emma gave her a death glare. They finished with the vocal work, so Bee tried to tell Emma any relevant facts about Piper’s background. “Piper is very stubborn, so it looks like you won’t have too much trouble with that. She also loves her daughter. She affectionately calls her monkey. But Piper also gets into trouble a lot, and now she hasn’t seen her in a year. It’s killing her, Emma.” Emma couldn’t imagine not seeing her kids for a day, let alone a year. “You’re a good sister, Bee” she said. Bee scoffed it off, but Emma was growing on her a little. “Okay, let’s go find the rattiest clothing that you own, and then make it a little grungier. Then your Piper costume will be believable.”
Piper drove to the police station. She had talked to Charlie on the phone the night before, letting him know she was okay, just a tad shaken up. “I’m coming in to work, I will not take no for an answer.” Charlie wasn’t about to let no be an answer anyways. There was a killer out there. The two of the were in the lab, running fingerprint info from the gun that Charlie had found. “We found the identity of the victim. Some lowlife named Tragedy. We never got anything back from the DNA evidence from the first victim, for some reason. Do you remember anything about her physical description?” Piper figured Sherry Ann must have somehow covered up the identity of Lemona. I suppose having a murder victim who looked identical to her would have raised a few questions. “Um, sorry Charlie. The events from that day are just all a blur.” Charlie nodded understandingly. “I’m glad you’re okay, Sherry Ann. I would have been devastated if something happened to you.” Piper smiled. “Aww, stop it Charlie.” “Oh, that reminds me. There was a call for you earlier, right before you got here. I took the number down.” Piper went to Sherry Ann’s desk, and dialed the number with trepidation. A female voice with an undistinguishable accent answered. “Hello Piper.” Piper dropped the phone. Piper? How did they know who she was, and to reach her here? “Who is this,” Piper demanded. “Meet me at my apartment. The address is in your email. I know where you sister Bee lives, so I advise showing up as soon as possible if you don’t want anything to happen to her.” Then she hung up. “salsa,” swore Piper. She ran back into the lab. “Charlie, you’re going to kill me, but I need to go somewhere for a bit, and I can’t tell you where.” Charlie looked at her. “Sherry Ann, is everything okay? There’s something you aren’t telling me. I’m your friend, I can help if you need it.” Piper considered so badly how nice it would be to be able to let Charlie in, and help her with this. But she couldn’t, not yet. “I’m so sorry,” she said and ran out, putting the address into her GPS.
Rellim was waiting in line to speak with Doctor Dante, the geneticist who had finished a rousing lecture. He had spoken about the growing potential of animal cloning. When somebody asked him his views on human cloning, he had said “I believe that human cloning is an avenue we are headed towards, and fast. The possibilities that could come from it are endless.” He also said some very in-depth scientific stuff that Rellim understood, and it intrigued her. The line moved quickly, as Dr. Dante wasn’t much for small talk amongst people he considered beneath him. When Rellim reached him, he looked at her with bewilderment. “You,” he said and pointed at her. “What are you doing here?” Rellim looked baffled. “Excuse me,” she asked confused. “You know exactly what I mean. You’re not here by coincidence.” But then he stopped himself. There were still other people here. “Meet me in the hotel lobby after I’m done with these wastrels. Jesus Christ, I can’t believe this.”
Piper creeped up to the apartment. “I’m going to die, aren’t I,” she thought to herself. She knocked on the door, which creaked open. She cautiously entered the apartment. Standing in front of her was a completely disheveled clone. At this point in time, she wasn’t even remotely surprised by this. She was essentially expecting it. “Who are you,” asked Piper. But the clone didn’t answer. Instead, she started talking with the same undistinguishable accent. “Who are you, Piper. Why have you become Sherry Ann.” The mysterious clone had a very meticulous way of speaking. “How do you know so much about me,” asked Piper. “Because I was going to kill Sherry Ann. But you’re not Sherry Ann.” “That doesn’t answer my question. And you’ve been killing all the clones. Are you going to kill me.” The clone shook her head. “You’re different. I’ve been watching you for a few days. Since you replaced Sherry Ann. Help me, Piper. We’re both different!” Piper shook her head. “You’re a maniac. Why are you doing this?” The clone said “You’re unnatural. Abominations! You need to be exterminated.” “But why are we different?” But the clone shook your head. “You’ll help me soon enough,” she said, and jumped out the window of the apartment, which was on the first floor. Piper ran to the window, but she was already out of sight. “What the potato ,” she said, more lost than ever.
“Her name is Antenora. I was working with the doctor who created you. I was his assistant sort of. Antenora was kept in the lab, as sort of a control element.” Dante and Rellim were sitting at the hotel bar, and Dante was being surprisingly open with her. Not only did he let her know that he knew about the clones, but he knew something about the clone that was killing them. “We would run experiments on her. All of the other clones were let out into the world, mostly adopted by families who knew nothing about where they came from. We did our best to keep tabs on all of you.” Rellim jolted back. “You’ve been watching us,” she asked. “Not exactly. We know where you are most of the time, but you have complete free will. Anyways, I was saying. Antenora was our main test subject. But I started to develop feelings for her. She was smart. She knew about the other clones, and wanted to know why she was being kept her. So I lied to her. I told her she was the original.” “And she’s not the original,” Relim asked. Dante shook his head. “No. I had no idea who the original was. The only one who did was the main doctor. When Antenora thought she was the original, it made her unstable. She murdered the doctor, obviously leaving me in huge trouble. We got word that she was killing the other clones.” “Yes, we’re in danger. Are you going to do anything to stop her?” Dante nodded. “Yes. She’s after clones, so we’re going to kidnap some, and use them as a trap.” Before Rellim realized what was happening, Dante injected her with a sedative. “Quickly, before anybody notices,” he said quietly to henchmen who had been there the whole time I guess.
Piper was walking back towards the police station, although she was at a loss towards what to do. Her phone rang, an incoming call from Hermes. She picked it up, remembering that Emma was meant to be there now seeing her daughter. “Oh, hi Hermes,” she said, fearing the worst. “Piper, it was nice to see you, and I’m glad you and your daughter are together, but you two have been out for quite a while now. Could you bring her home soon.” Piper relaxed a little. “Of course, Hermes. I’m just savoring this.” She hung up then called Emma straight away. The phone rang for a little while. Finally it was picked up. “Hello there, Piper,” said Dante. She heard Emma’s voice faintly in the background. “I’m sorry, I couldn’t make it to your daughter’s.” Piper froze. Emma hadn’t gone to her daughter. Then who had? “potato ,” she said, “so that’s what the clone meant.” She started running. She didn’t know where, she just had to find her daughter. A black van pulled up. “There she is,” the men said, and pulled her in, driving towards Dante’s lair.
