It's possible, I think. I was reading this book and caught this in Chapter 7. Chapter 7 starts off with the Mill Murder article, and the next page shows the article was changed from murder to accident. The next few pages are a letter, from Geraldine to Esme. Esme asked her about Jerome Squalor. So on the first page of the letter, Geraldine says: "As you know, the editor-in-chief just fired our dramatic critic, whose name escapes me" (skip forward) "So I'm confident you'll never get another bad review for your performances on the stage, whether you're acting in one of Al Funcoot's plays or something else."
So timeline wise how could this be? Esme was asking about where to find Jerome Squalor and Geraldine said she could find him in the mornings at the VFD cafe. This letter, also mentions that Jerome just recently bought the penthouse. In Book 6, The Ersatz Elevator, Jerome mentions he and Esme had only been living in the penthouse for a few weeks. In the next letter in Chapter 7 of UA, Jacques Snicket is writing to Jerome, and the very next letter is Jerome's response. He says it's a shame Jacques never contacted him (the letter never arrived, it's implied Olaf's henchmen the doorman stole it) because he and Esme are married, and they're thinking of adopting kids and he wanted his advice. Jacques mentions in his letter, he's hiding in the Vile Village/VFD since he found a couplet about the mill murder (How could the Quagmires/Isadora have written it though?). In Chapter 5 of UA, the Vineyard letter says that Jerome and Esme were married after just one evening together!!! So it seems like all this happened before Book 5 of the Baudelaires story!!!
But it could all be a red herring. In Book 6 the Ersatz Elevator, from pages 44-46, Esme says that the In Auction is always hosted by her, like she's solo, but then she says 'we' multiple times, and Jerome says that he wanted to do something different this year. But then on page 46, it's mentioned by Jerome that 'we just moved in a few weeks ago.' In the same Chapter 7 of UA, Geraldine mentions that she would "Someday, I hope to uncover a major story, maybe a murder" and like I posted the Mill Murder article is the page right before...but in the same paragraph she also says 'but in the meantime, as you know, I just write a boring old column called 'Secret Organizations You Should Know About.'
So in Chapter 5 of UA, Lemony is fired as the dramatic critic, after writing for the paper for just over a year (and he also mentions in his article he and Beatrice are engaged!). And it mentions that the column that's to immediately replace his is called 'Secret Organizations You Should Know About' written by Geraldine. And in Chapter 5, it's also mentioned that Beatrice and Lemony are about to get married (The Vineyard letters). The next page/letter says that Jerome and Esme were married after just one evening together, like I wrote already. But it could be a red herring? Geraldine told Esme to meet Jerome in the morning so could you still prove the timeline was so soon?
What do you all think? How do the Quagmires, Lemony, and Beatrice fit into all this?
