Soooo, something I adored about the 2004 movie was the BEAUTIFUL score by Thomas Newman. We've been able to listen to a certain music in the teaser, which I liked, but I really hope they will have a more varied sound palette. Also, I was wondering about the main theme... Will we have an original as for Stranger Things? Could the teaser music be that one? Oooorr..... has anyone thought of The Gothic Archies making a return with Scream and Run Away? What if they use also each song from The Tragic Treasury according to the book we're watching?
What are your thoughts about this?

I'm in the apparent minority who wasn't a big fan of the cutesy magical score in the teaser (I didn't hate it, just would've preferred something with more weight, like Newman's film score). It's very possible that this is not what the final score will sound like. The composer is Nick Urata and he's quite good and I'd think somewhat different than the rather bland background music of the teaser. There is a thread about Urata scoring the series here. Oh yeah, and I wouldn't count on Stephin Merritt (aka The Gothic Archies) making original songs for the series, as they probably would've advertised or hinted at that already (unless it's supposed to be a surprise); also, Merritt hasn't done any film scores so far. It would be cool if they used some of the already existing Gothic Archies songs, that's for sure.

Handler tried to get the Gothic Archies' music into the 2004 movie, but was unsuccessful (he mentions this in an interview somewhere, about how his attempts segued into a discussion about iPods or something and he realised it wasn't going to happen). He might well have tried again with the TV series, though there's certainly a question of how you'd integrate them. Themes for the closing credits, perhaps?

The only music from the film I can really remember is the closing credits, but the music I can remember was brilliant. I love "Scream and Run Away" so I'd be very happy if they included that; I think it would make sense to have the relevant Tragic Treasury song in the closing credits. In my opinion, the music in the Netflix trailer was decent, at least in the context of that trailer, but I wouldn't expect or hope it to be representative of the series' entire score. Everything they've done so far has reassured me, at least for the time being, that the show will have a suitable tone, certainly not too upbeat but not too dark for children, so I think it would be odd if the entire score was like the trailer's music.

I thought the music in the trailer was nice, but doesn't compare to Thomas Newman's work in the movie.
To be fair, trailer music for larger productions is often just temp music or music made specifically for the trailer, and may have the same mood as the final music, but is not, and also is often not as good as, the final version of the music. Plus, Thomas Newman is a legend — not everyone can say they've racked up thirteen Academy Award nominations!

Taking back again this, I have to say I loved the music!! The Thomas Newman's OST will always be legendary, of course. But I think having James Newton Howard really help the soundtrack having a particular tone. Love the accordion touches, very Lemony. The music when Violet invented the grappling hook touched my heart.
Any idea or infos on an OST release? Stranger Things had that, so I don't see why this couldn't!!

I think JNH's score worked in some moments, like at the end of TBB parts 1 & 2, but it was really quite grating in scenes such as when Klaus confronts Olaf about his marriage plan. In the book, it's a horrifying, stomach-churning moment as you realize just how potato ed up Olaf really is, but in the Netflix series it's played almost like a joke. And in scenes like the Hurricane Herman sequence it's just goddamned stupid.

It fits the show's tone really well. Not sure I'd listen to as a standalone work, but there were many moments watching the series where I noticed and liked the scoring. The use of accordion stood out to me too. Also some of the villainous music accompanying Olaf's treacherous deeds.
Edit: I'll have to pay more attention to the score on a second listen. There were maybe some scenes that seemed overly playful, depending on taste. I thought what played during the destruction of Josephine's house was a bit silly, but so was the directing itself; the scene seemed self aware of being over the top

Currently going through my second viewing, I've decided the music spoils the tone in lots of The Bad Beginning, but otherwise I think it's wonderful and I'd enjoy listening to it independently. As it's more of an accumulation of recurring themes, rather than stand-out pieces (songs aside), it might be nice if it came out after another (or all) series have been released, so there's more content and diversity.

Worth mentioning is that Newton Howard wasn't responsible for the entirety of the show's music. Nick Urata wrote all the original songs (music, not lyrics) and I saw that the composer for the final episode's score was not Howard either, but someone else altogether. I haven't checked the credits of the other episodes, but it's possible that there might be one or two other episodes with a different composer.

I did enjoy the music; while there was no actual Gothic Archies music the feel was very similar and there was plenty of accordion.

The movie's soundtrack was fantastic and the Netflix team had their work cut out for them in trying to live up to that legacy.
I feel like most of the music - songs excluded - isn't anything to write home about but the leitmotif that plays during particularly sombre moments (Uncle Monty being brought out on a stretcher etc.) is beautiful.

That is the exact same piece of the soundtrack that stuck out to me as well - that haunting choir. So, so sad. Every time I hum it, I remember all the moments they used that particular bit of music - Justice Strauss, holding "Adoption Law and You" in her library, all alone; Uncle Monty being carried away under sheets; Lemony turning the camera away from the opening Very Fancy Door, trying to save the viewers from what he has been warning them about this whole time. Beautiful. I rewatched episode 4 to try and pinpoint the moment they used it and funnily enough it doesn't appear with Uncle Monty on the stretcher - which is odd, because I could swear up and down that it did! It does appear later on, just not paired with that scene. It's still a lovely piece of music, though!
