I figured it'd be best to group these by book. Here, discuss eps 1 & 2. Feel free to discuss your knowledge what happens beyond these eps (as far as the TV show and the book series are concerned), but please put that in a spoiler tag.

Have just finished the first episode - here are my quick thoughts: I REALLY loved Neil Patrick Harris in this. The first season it took me a while to warm up to him; here I'm already loving his performance. His Genghis voice at the end was something else. Also really love Sara Rue as the librarian/Olivia! Let's see... oh, the sugar bowl in the opening credits made me squeal, and the reference to the Snickets and taxis! Final, random thought on the episode: Jacquelyn's line about the mountains - something like "thought we weren't supposed to arrive there until the end of the season" - gave me the biggest laugh.

Im so happy! For me, this episode is so much better than the whole first season! I love that Malina and Louis look so much more comfortable playing the baudelaires, I love the new music, Carmelita, everything is great!

Just finished the first episode.
Poor Larry just can't catch a break. Love the librarian. Carmelita is delightfully insufferable. That Spice Girls reference really had me in stitches.
I know as a book reader I can be pedantic about adaptations, but I do appreciate the efforts to mix things up, include more/new characters and make the children more aware of VFD. Example, the advanced computer system being expensive and actively used but ultimately useless keeping Olaf out.
It feels like a do-over for Mr Handler; and I love it.
Edit: The Carmelita Olaf tag team emerging early is such a new dynamic to the story. I've previously said this elsewhere but Carmelita's desire to perform and be the centre of attention reminds me of her behaviour in TGG. ....Or at least establishing it sooner makes her seem at least less one dimensional, I haven't decided yet.

Just finished part one, and wow was that a lot to take in. It felt kind of like a fever dream, but not necessarily in a bad way.
A few thoughts before I start part two:
- I loved the callbacks to the first season, whether plot points or running gags
- Watching and re-watching the trailers made certain lines feels weird in context, just because I was so used to hearing them in a different one
- Olaf and Carmelita bounced off each other well
-The references to the Mortmain Mountains got me excited, I like that they’re building that up
- There was one point when Isadora was talking about a past guardian and she said something like “she lost her wife” and it shocked me so much I had to rewind to make sure I heard right. It’s definitely not the epitome of LGBT representation (also it’s sad) but the fact that they casually put a line like that made me happy, especially since last season they kind of skirted the line between subtext and explicit representation with Sir and Charles.
Uhhh there was a lot more but I think that’s all I’m going to say for now, my brain is kind of all over the place and I’m still processing

Just finished the first episode -- I loved it, and I'll have more to say later, but right now I want to go straight on to episode two.
Quick thoughts -- all the acting is spot on. I'm just so happy to see the Baudelaires again!
I love the self-aware jokes as always. 'Growth spurt?'
Genghis is great. Larry is amazing and his life is so tragic. The Quagmires are just right!
I feel sorry for Violet's invention of noisy shoes because that was really good! But having a more showy invention for the screen makes sense.
OK now I have to watch more.

Just finished episode two.
That scene between Lemony and Jacques had me weeping. Perhaps my favorite scene in the entire series so far.
This season already makes season one feel like it was just a prototype. If it keeps this up, the amount of water that will leak from my face will likely be borderline insane.

Episode two was even better than episode one this is incredible!
Quick thoughts: Jacques and Lemony -- my goodness, that scene was beautiful. So, so sad. Heartbreaking.
CARMELITA WHAT ARE YOU DOING THIS IS HILARIOUS SHE ACTUALLY SNIFFS CAKES.
I really like the drawings on the blackboard foreshadowing TGG (and maybe other books but it went by too quickly for me to see).
The disguises were really cool!!
Count Olaf's constant jibes about how dead the Baudelaires' parents are ... wow, they're harsh. Both hilarious and horrible.
Mr Poe and Vice Principal Nero together was great -- 'Why on the candy?'
I really like how confident Violet is this season!! She feels more like the real Violet than ever.
Fernald being worried about Sunny's head literally exploding was really sweet and funny -- as was his reaction to the 'Die Die Books'.
On to The Ersatz Elevator!!

Okay, finished episode two. It’s very late so I’m thinking maybe I should have waited until I was more well rested to watch more, but whatever I couldn’t help myself.
Some more scattered thoughts:
- Oh man, that scene with Lemony narrarating while in the taxi next to Jacques was great, and sad
- The whole thing with Mrs. Bass’s robbery. omg.
- I liked the motivational speaker angle they went for with Genghis, I found it entertaining
- Honestly I’m not a huge fan of the romantic undertones they gave Violet and Duncan as well as Isadora and Klaus. I know Violet/Duncan was kind of teased in the book but it all struck me as odd and unnecessary. idk I just don’t think it added much. It wasn’t too obnoxious, though, so I’m not that annoyed.
- There were certain things that I was looking forward to that didn’t end up happening but I’m not too upset at the moment
- That part with Sunny sorting was weird, it just looked odd and unnatural even for this show
- There were a lot of good jokes, but they’re all slipping my mind right now
The show is very fast-paced and hard for my tired brain to keep up with this late, but I’m definitely looking forward to watching more tomorrow!

Finished episode two, and sounds like everyone's had similar thoughts to mine: -Nathan Fillion is such a good pick for Jacques. I wish he was on standby in my daily life with hot chocolate and a trauma blanket. Showing us Jacques actively helping the Baudelaires was a great touch and corroborates his claim of doing this in TVV. -The even darker reprise of the Lucky Smells theme during the running laps montage was such fantastic use. -Nero's autobiography would be called "Why Won't You Write Me Back?" -The glowing zero part from the book at least getting a reference in the adaptation. -ALL THE SHIPTEASE. -Lemony's memory of his brother was so touching. Patrick and Nathan looked like believeable brothers sitting side by side like that in the taxi. -Faux Sunny looked ....somewhat believeable. -NO NO NO NOT THE LIBRARY HE'LL EXPECT YOU THERE but good to read to pass the time. The book plant is a little deus ex machina but seems more plausible than the triplets doing vague "research" in the book. -That computer system has all the logic of The Simpsons' bear patrol and Lisa's tiger repelling rock.As much as I want to binge the rest, I will approach this season like a fine wine tasting: sipping slowly, savouring and appreciating the effects. No good drinking the whole lot in a short amount of time and retaining very little. Will take it two episodes a time.

I'm not fully sold on Larry and Jacquelyn yet, but overall I loved these episodes. Genghis was done excellently, with the costume, the accent and the persona; I also loved the advanced computer interpretation. Most of the minor changes from the books seemed logical and sometimes great improvements, as was the case in most of season 1. The constant orphan jokes at the expense of the Baudelaires are harsh and hilarious. One thing I'm not a fan of is the Baudelaire/Quagmire romantic interactions. The casting of the Quagmires is fine, even though Duncan and Isadora don't look identical (or even nearly so). But Isadora looks very similar to Violet, and in fact Olaf mistakes the Quagmires for the Baudelaires, and the former can dress as the latter with minimal disguise. This makes the Isadora/Klaus flirting very uncomfortable and with a rather unintentional incestuous overtone that the books never had a problem with, as the Quagmire triplets only looked like each other and not like the Baudelaires. I'm also not a fan of Nero's casting, or his violin playing - which should be more dramatic and worse (I don't really like how he's playing recognisable tunes). I think Nero needs to look less messy and more professional but nasty. Excellent moments: - Mr. Poe begins the episode with the opposite of Lemony's very first narration to TBB, and then it's revealed that Poe is referring to The Pony Party. Wonderful nested joke.
- The conversation with the librarian and Klaus is a throwback to Justice Strauss and Klaus' conversation in Netflix's TBB.
- "adversity means trouble" / "adversity means Count Olaf" is a reference to Klaus in TBB.
- The school is named after Feint, a reference to ATWQ.
- There's a poster advertising the violin recitals, and one of the adjectives is "nightly".
I have many more comments jotted down but I'm in a hurry so I'll type them up later. I made a note of this too - I think it's a good line. I imagine this opinion might be slightly controversial but I think Sir and Charles were presented as more explicitly a couple in the Netflix series than they were in the books... and there'll be another opportunity to add to this in TPP (in the books, it's implied they sleep in the same bed).
