I figured it'd be best to group these by book. Here, discuss eps 5 & 5. It will be assumed you have seen episodes 1-6, as well. Feel free to discuss your knowledge what happens beyond these eps (as far as the TV show and the book series are concerned), but please put that in a spoiler tag.

The Volunteers Fighting Disease song sing-along is one of the most glorious moments this show has ever been responsible for. ... I'm pretty much saying that once an episode but I mean it every time.

Are the red gloves of the person who took the Sugar Bowl at the endow 8 the same that wrote the note to Lemony in the clip we saw of VFD headquarters?

I officially deem these episodes the best this season which is premature since I have not seen TCC yet, but damn I love these episodes.

OK, these episodes were absolutely everything I dreamed they'd be.
I'm so happy that they managed to make it genuinely scary/creepy, especially in the scene in the Library of Records with Esmé and her incredibly horrible Cruella de Vil-esque costume.
The set design was amazing (though I always pictured the finished half as much cleaner, but the dirty design was just as good).
I was so sorry for Violet and I love how brave she is in the Library of Records (I always think it's one of her bravest moments from the books). Also I was glad that they essentially kept the bungee rope invention the same, just without having to spend ages tying rubber bands together, which makes sense for television.
The unfinished wing was so cool ... Oh, and Hal's emphasis on how much he trusts the Baudelaires was --argh!! I could just feel their guilt.
The Volunteers Fighting Disease were perfect.
OH and they included Systematically Assisting Sisyphus's stealthy, cyst-susceptible sister.' line which I LOVE.
Klaus & Sunny as Dr. Faustus were hilarious.
When I've re-watched the episodes I'll have more to add, but those are my main thoughts for the moment.

I'm surprised that my least favourite of the books turned out to be the scariest of the show. My heart is pounding and I finished over half an hour ago. It's taking a while to calm down, to be honest. But I'm absolutely over the moon that the Person of Indeterminate Gender didn't die!! I could cry.

As someone who's finished the season, I'll just say that I think Esme's scene in the hall of records is the scariest and best moment any of the villains on this show have received. Lucy Punch is amazing. And honestly Olaf got his best moment to date in the following episode (8), in my opinion.

I agree, that scene was insane. The way Lucy Punch switches from comedic to terrifying was amazing -- and it really made her appear truly insane. And the follow up also did a really good job of making Olaf scary, too. Also when he walks along smashing lightbulbs ... they got the tone of these episodes PERFECT.

I loved every second of THH. They are perfect in every way.
Esme is my favorite she is funny one minute then terrifying the next. The hall of records scene was better then I imagined. Then Olaf giving his speech sent chills down my spine.
Hal was wonderful. It was nice to have a decent person in their lives. Which made it even more heartbreaking when they stole from him.
I was totally shocked when we actually saw the sugar bowl. I didn't expect that at all. I'm curious how they will handle the parent subplot. I know there are theories about Beatrice being alive then dying later. I wonder if the show will hint at that or if they will just gloss over that.
This has to be up there as my favorite episode. I liked that it was just the Children this time. I was getting tired of Larry and Jacquline showing up.
Poe was meh for me. Felt like they didn't need him but he didn't hurt anything. I thought they missed a joke:
"I saw this hospital and thought I should check out my----" Poe starts to cough
"Your Cough" Hal says
"No, what cough? I don't have a cough?" Poe looks confused "no to see if I got the bird flew" Or something like that. I'm not funny or a writer.

I mean they did have Poe looking confused when Hal mentions his cough so they kind of did that joke! Just without really stating it.

They did kind of do that joke. He tells Hal he was just at the village of fowl devotees and he's worried he caught swine flu. The joke being that bird flu is what you would expect.
The things people had mentioned - Dr. Faustus, HOIG surviving, actually seeing the sugar bowl (!), were all great. It also was great at portraying the Baudelaires' guilt and Hal's sadness at his betrayal, and was definitely the scariest so far. The parts where Esme is chasing them and the twins holding red balloons looking like they stepped out of a horror movie especially.
The Snicket file being a film that began as complete and which they had to give up and then it burned up was a departure from the books, but a welcome one. In the book I always thought making Quigley the survivor was a bit of a copout, considering the photograph was of the parents, but Jacques never said which fire or gave any indication it was the Baudelaire fire, which will make it easier to explain away in season 3.

I never had a problem with the Quigley reveal just because, well, they only had one page from the entire file, so many families could have been discussed. But I agree that the video file works really well.

I really enjoyed how amplified everything was in Part 1 especially; the horror and the fear are barely played for laughs, and likewise, Hal's guilt-inducing trust in the Baudelaires is cranked up as high as it could go, to great effect. The Volunteers Fighting Disease are particularly creepy, though in rather a different way; their unique singalong subtitles were a nice touch, in addition to, in a first, their song being absolutely faithful to its original rendition in the books. (With a few additional verses, at least.) Part 2 is a little more of a mixed bag in terms of tone overall, and I'm not sure that I like Count Olaf seeing through Dr. Faustus's disguise and actively planning on luring Klaus and Sunny to the operating theatre; but at the same time, I appreciate that we get a renewed sense of his competence, which has been distinctly lacking at times. In the final moments, the Henchperson of Indeterminate Gender delivering a particularly unenthusiastic The Shining reference after breaking through the supply closet door was a delight.
The reworking of the Snicket File I feel is overall for the best, even though I have argued against the use of the Quigley-survivor subplot on the grounds of repetition, whereas they will almost certainly be playing it completely straight come TSS. So far as it goes in the books, THH couldn't decide if it was the Snicket File or the Baudelaire File, and in the following books the survivor caption alternates between being above and below the photograph of the Baudelaire parents; in the Netflix adaptation they are at least a lot more careful about this. Replacing the file with a more carefully-composed film reel, and then disposing of it immediately rather than having it shamble on in the background for several books before being more or less written out and replaced with the sugar bowl is definitely for the best.

Some thoughts on Part 1:
-the Volunteers Fighting Disease were fantastic
-I really like how they’re building up the Mortmain Mountains! I think there’s been at least one mention in each set of episodes, it makes me so excited.
-Changing the hospital from clean and, well, basically just like a typical hospital to grimy and disgusting was a really great decision. It helps set the mood well.
-It’s very interesting how they changed the medium of the Snicket File. Speaking of, it appears they are keeping that “survivor of the fire” plot line.
-Hal!!! In the books I always found what happened with the Baudelaires and Hal to be very sad, and they’ve really amped up the heartbreak in the show. He brought them soup! In the unfinished wing! I’m so sad.
-I loved Hal’s “I file you under ‘M’ for ‘My friends’
-Some files visible when they’re looking for the Snicket File: “Slippery Slopes” and “Sniffers Cake”
-I loved the horror angle they went for in this episode. That end scene with Esme chasing Violet in particular was great. Esme is terrifying. Her stiletto stilettos were perfect.

Finished part 2!
-I can’t believe they kept in that odd story about the butterflies omg
-The scene with Violet and Olaf was incredibly creepy. I felt like Olaf in these two episodes comes off as a better, scarier villain and less silly than in any of the previous episodes. My one reservation is that he kept Babs alive for some reason. Did they give a reason why? I wonder if she has any sort of importance later on and that’s why the show didn’t kill her off. It just seems odd to me because he never seems to hesitate to murder anyone who gets in his way.
-The wallpaper in the room they were keeping Violet had clowns on it. Creepy.
-The Henchperson of Indeterminate Gender was reading what looked like a romance novel to me
-I thought it was interesting how they were fully aware it was Klaus in disguise, and basically lured him into a trap to force him to cut off Violet’s head. “Cruelest way imaginable” indeed.
-Having Olaf see the Snicket file and also think one of the Baudelaire parents are the survivor of the fire is an interesting departure
-I liked the part where Fernald was anxiously waiting for the Henchperson on Indeterminate Gender before they took off. It was a nice detail.
-Lemony tattoo reveal!
-Who was that who took the Sugar Bowl??
