I have just picked up a second-hand copy of this - when it was new I thought it was not worth the price, for something that was largely a repeat of stuff we already knew: but for just three pounds it seemed worth having. I seem to remember that there was a guide to it somewhere, identifying the sources of quotations, but I cannot remember where it was - does anyone know?

Welp, now you got me feeling rightfully foolish for having spent the full price on the book back then. Oh well, I got a kick out of the introduction in the book.

A guide to the sources of all the quotations? That does sound familiar, but I'm not sure where it might have existed; I just checked, and it wasn't Quidditch.com's famous guide. Ah, here it is - Horseradish Quotes by Antenora and Gigi, in DDocuments.

Thank you, that's splendid!
And Terry, it's not as though one could predict that a second-hand copy would turn up eleven years later, so you should not blame yourself.

Sorry, quick question, what on Earth is this whole Horseradish thing? I gather it's something to do with quotes.

Horseradish: Bitter Truths You Can't Avoid is a book compiling a large number of Snicket's best quotes, sayings, aphorisms and so on, many of them original to that volume. The introduction contains a brief but suitably Snicketesque short story. A Google Image search for the title should give you a good idea of what to expect.
