Good eye; as I recall, that is indeed one of the earliest examples of a promised detail which never quite comes to pass. It reads like one of the less relevant details Snicket often mentions in passing in his Kind Editor letters, so we probably aren't missing much; but it is always a little uncomfortable when these inconsistencies emerge.

Do we have anything to indicate how many liberties the Kind Editor takes with their kind editing? Maybe some part of the manuscript they received from the dry cleaners was cut out before publishing. That's not a good explanation for Handler's book, but I think it suffices for Snicket's.
