The Beatrice Letters says that Violet did emergency repairwork. But I reread it, and it never specifically says that Violet repaired the boat. What if the emergency repairwork was only for the lifejackets...?
In The End, it says this about the boat right before they left the island:
The eldest Baudelaire had been surprised to find that the boat that looked best for the task was the one on which they had arrived, although by the time she was done repairing and readying it for the voyage she was not surprised after all. She repaired the hull of the boat, and fastened new sails to the masts, and finally she looked at the nameplate reading COUNT OLAF, and with a small frown, she tore through the tape and removed it.
The End also says this about the lifejackets:
Where's the baby?” Violet said. "I want to make sure these life jackets I've designed will fit properly.”
Since Violet did so much work to the boat before they set sail, I don't see why it would've needed extra repairs once it was in the water. The lifejackets on the otherhand, sound more like prototypes that still need tweaking.
More than anything else, the poster from The Beatrice Letters shows that the boat actually hit a huge pile of rocks and was split into a lot of pieces. So Violet couldn't have repaired it anyway.
Klaus lost his glasses, Violet lost her ribbon, and Sunny lost her cooking whisk. The Baudelaires wouldn't have willingly left their favorite or necessary items behind. So, it reads to me like the Baudelaires and Beatrice Jr got tossed out of the boat and into the ocean, where they went their separate ways. They survived because Violet made some repairs/adjustments to the lifejackets at the last second. I also think that the kids went 4 separate ways, not just the Baudelaires staying together while Beatrice Jr is the only one who's lost.
It says in the Bad Beginning Rare edition that Violet went to Briny Beach for the 3rd time. The Beatrice Letters says that Sunny is a young woman with a cooking show. And the Reptile Room says that Klaus was alive years later, regretting not stopping Stephano from killing.
And all of these mentions make it sound like each Baudelaire is all alone. Why is Violet going the Briny Beach alone? Why is Sunny not trying to contact her family via radio? Why is Klaus lying in bed all alone instead of discussing the past with his sisters/Beatrice Jr?
It reads to me like each Baudelaire thinks that their other siblings/family are dead. Which would be a really interesting parallel to Kit and Jacques wrongly believing for years that Lemony was dead. Even Beatrice Jr in one of her letters to Lemony, says that "The three Baudelaires may be long gone, but there is still a fourth Baudelaire here, waiting for you to untie my Silence Knot," So it seems like even she gives up on searching for them eventually.
And In The End, it says this:
There are some who say that the Baudelaires rejoined V.F.D. and are engaged in brave errands to this day, perhaps under different names to avoid being captured.
There are others who say that they perished at sea, although rumors of one's death crop up so often, and are so often revealed to be untrue.
There are others who say that they perished at sea, although rumors of one's death crop up so often, and are so often revealed to be untrue.
So, it says that Violet, Klaus, and Sunny are still wanted criminals. And the rumors of their deaths might even be in the Daily Punctilio, just like what happened to Lemony. They can't claim their fortune if that's true.
In that case, they really are just like Lemony Snicket. They're on the run and totally separate from anyone they know. Which is also just like how Lemony in the Unauthorized Autobiography was banned from talking to his siblings and his love interest after he went on the run. The Baudelaires will never be safe again. And also like Lemony, the Baudelaires may even be actively avoiding Beatrice Jr, because they don't want her to get dragged into anything. Which is why it's impossible for her to find them.
What do you think?
