A little while back I was able to come in contact with the composer for Seasons 2 and 3, Jim Dooley. After a bit of chatting he agreed to answer any questions we had for him about his work on the series and film/tv scoring in general. Please feel free to submit as many questions as you wish on pretty much any topic as long as it does not revolve around why he replaced the composers for Season 1. He explained to me that he didn't want to unintentionally insult them or their work so any questions relating to the issue will go answered. Please try to have all your questions submitted by next 4:00 pm (PT) Friday so that I can send them off to him on time.

1 - How was the musical composition process for Beatrice's theme song? What feelings did he want to have at that moment? (I ask this because when I heard that musical theme this year, it managed to change me to re-analyze my feelings about the series. I felt that there was something like a mystery and a bittersweet touch to that song, as if that song reflected my feelings about Beatrice. In fact, it was that sound that made me rethink everything I thought about Beatrice, and even inspired me to write the fanfic Untie My Silence Knot, and I wanted to know how he did it).

Could you tell us more about the process of developing your own custom instruments for the show?

What was the most challenging composition and why?
Was there a composition of yours that was not used even though you like it very much?
Because Daniel Handler was a musician, did he have any part in the creative process of musical themes?
Do you need to use storyboards to create the musical themes for each film set, or did you see the sets ready to be inspired?

How much of ASOUE's books did you need to know to compose the music? Or was it necessary to know only the script?

If any of you have any other questions you'd like to ask, the next 18 or so hours is the time to do it, as I'll be sending these questions off to Jim Dooley by the end of today.

How did you approach integrating the material developed by other composers in Season 1?
Relatedly, did you try to take inspiration from the movie's score or the Gothic Archies, or strive to find a unique sound?
Not that it's been *that* long, but with the benefit of hindsight, is there anything you'd do differently if you were approaching scoring ASoUE *today*?
How did the sheer process of this precise, timed scoring work — did you compose your music based on script/storyboard, hand it in, and then have the episodes edited to match the music, or did you already work from a complete (rough?) cut of the footage?

Your tracks are brilliant, and many would like to listen to them individually. A petition for the show's score to be released reached 1735 signatures, and your uploading of tracks onto YouTube has been hugely appreciated! Is there any chance of an album being released (even if only digitally and even if only with your tracks)? If not, is there someone in particular we could approach to show our enthusiasm for this to happen? The instrument that I recognise your music for most of all is what sounds like a wind instrument, and it suggests mystery and drama (it can be heard at 1:10 here youtu.be/2D4KXo8fWLY?t=70). What's it called, and is it a conscious favourite of yours? Did Barry Sonnenfeld request this show's soundtrack to have similarities to that in Pushing Daisies, or did the show's character simply lend itself to such similarities? It's known that you played lots of different instruments for the soundtrack. Did you ever use synthetic sounds from your computer, or are the tracks completely 'organic'? How did you first come to meet and work with Barry Sonnenfeld?

Hi Guys, I'm sorry I haven't been in contact these last few days but a family emergency came up. Now that it has been taken care of I have some good news and bad news.
The bad news is that Jim Dooley won't be able to answer our questions right away as he is working on a video. The good news is that the video is actually a Q and A response for us based on the questions we asked.
He said he really appreciated the level of detail in all the questions you guys contributed and was looking forward to answering them.

Great! Some people should learn from his example about how to treat those who like your job.

Thanks, gothicarchiesfan ! Did you reach him through reddit, or was it part of an AMA? Because I couldn't find a reddit page where other questions were posted.
