Chapter 8: “Checking the jackets,” he said. “You’d be surprised at how often one book is slipped into the cover of another.” “Really?” I think this is a great reference to LSTUA.
Chapter 8: Hangfire used her ability to imitate other people's voices to try to empty the lighthouse and then steal the figurine. Why hadn't he done this before, and why did he feel like doing it this time? Has there been any major change from his point of view? The only thing I can guess is that Hangfire realized how easy it would be to personally steal the figurine after the VFD members' near-successful attempt. Probably Hangfire was a victim of his own imagination. He must have imagined that the figurine was kept very well protected and that only well-trained "professionals" could circumvent security systems. But when he realized how silly S was, and that even so she was almost successful in stealing what he wanted, he must have realized that reality was different from what he had imagined.

Chapter 9 I have to recognize that I get very excited when I find any reference to TBL. Lemony said he took off notes to break up locks, and Beatrice Jr states in a letter that managed to break a lock after VFD training.
Lemony states that he would stay the rest of his life scared because of what happened in SBTs. It is interesting that adult lemony describes himself as a fearful man.
Chapter 9 was action packed and I really enjoyed both the scenes and the narration. For me it was the best chapter so far.

Finally finished. It was fun despite the problems. I think a good theory can be made involving Lemony's parents, both real and fake. What Kit was looking for is a mystery. I don't think it's the SB content.

I don't think they are in denial about the father's death... The last information the SBTS people have about him is that he was sick...

Chapter 1: That opening passage will always be iconic. Just like the first paragraph of ASOUE, it manages to immediately introduce the reader to the writing style, as weall as Lemony’s unique personality at these different points in his life. Of course the Snicketverse has a Museum of Bad Breakfast! Is it just me or did Theodora sound unbelievably nervous when she was introducing herself to Lemony? The comment about destroying the wrong library always puzzled me: considering they were the blank books, didn’t he technically destroy the right library, and didn’t Ellington let off the sprinklers in the first place?

Final thoughts: The mystery was really intriguing but the rest of the plot felt like it was wandering from one place to another. I do like the descriptions and the ending.

Chapter 10 It was worth reading just to find out. I never got that reference. If you had known about my ATWQ's Jazz playlist, you wouldn't have found yourself in this embarrassing situation.
