In fact, the main villain's own motivation depends on the city not having turned into a city as abandoned as described in ?1. I believe that FU13 is the book that brings a more coherent characterization of SBTS. I prefer to believe that the train that leaves the city at the beginning of ?1 is taking most of the residents to some unmissable event in some other city (maybe the NBA Finals or a free hot dog festival).

Chapter 8: I actually like Ellington and Lemony’s dynamic. They bounce off of each other and that’s fun to watch. Chapter 9: This is the first time anyone has called Theodora by her first initial. Great, now I have a mental image of Theodora in the shower. Something about Stew cooing over the blanket is kind of creepy.

Chapter 6. Snicket's interaction with Moxie in this is one of my favorites, as it reminds me of my younger years with Roxy. Ahh... [ *blushes*

Chapter 11. The U.S. cover focused so much on Colophon Clinic, it's a shame we get to see so little of it. That will be fixed in my rewrite. It still baffles me that Hangfire was so willing to defenestrate Snicket. You're rewriting ATWQ? Indeed.

Chapter 7
I think there is a connection between Colonel C. and the animal BB. He was a war hero. Understanding a little about TGG and VFD, we can conclude that in the ASOUE universe at some point firearms were banned. So a war in which the BB animal was used as a weapon of maritime warfare is quite plausible. Colonel C has a chair shaped like a BB and made of the same material as the figurine, and he decided to be portrayed in the local paper sitting in that chair. If there were other figurines at some point, I think it is likely that at least one of them belonged to Colonel C. who used it as a weapon of war and so he could calmly give attention to a child near the battlefield while the animal BB did the work heavy at high speed. Even in TGG, if indeed there is a small spherical submarine followed by the BB, it is possible that we were contemplating the same way Colonel C. acted while acting on the high seas, and so it would not be surprising that Captain W and Olaf was afraid of that. After all, there are no more torpedoes underwater in the ASOUE universe.

Chapter 7 in the ASOUE universe at some point firearms were banned. So a war in which the BB animal was used as a weapon of maritime warfare is quite plausible. Um, no. In Chapter One of TCC, it is said that the Baudelaires are able to breathe in Olaf's trunk because of the bullet holes in it. During the Madame DeLustrio passage of TGG itself Lemony mentions that all social events he attends end in gunfire. Guns very much do exist in the Averse. I do like you using my spherical submarine theory.

Very well observed, dear dinosaur !! I had forgotten me completely! I will need to rethink a lot in my way of imagining the AVERSE ... could I say that although the firearms were not banished, they are much rarer than in our universe?

Chapter 10: I like the phrase troublesome underlings. Chapter 11: I’m starting to think Pip and Squeak’s father is dead. Hangfire finally reveals himself. Chapter 12: “A room with a low ceiling and someone screaming in it” I like that phrasing. Chapter 13: Oh hey Widdershins.

Final thoughts: I liked it better than Who Could It Be At This Hour.Overall it's less meandering and more cohesive. The ending is my favourite scene in the series thus far.

my final thoughts: the plot is just as nonsensical as ?1, but much more exciting. the meeting and interaction of LS & Ellington in this book has a special thrill to it rivalling the aura of noir's greatest femme fatales. (this is also the highlight of ?3, iirc.) the long-awaited appearance of Cleo was also striking in its characterization. these hints of genuinely unique, intriguing personalities in child-characters are perhaps the main features of children's lit that totally evaporate in an adaptation, presumably due to the incompetence of child actors. (one nice exception is HOLES.)
if the first two books are read back to back, and you happen to remember the raspberry berets in ?1 (like i did), then the central "twist" of this book is foreseen almost immediately.

I finally finished reading. I thought this book was better than the previous one. I enjoyed re-reading it and I liked that Lemony manages to shine more as a detective here. He pays attention to detail and remembers what was said. Still, there are a few plot holes, which messed me up a bit: Why did Doctor F. scream so much? Cleo wasn't even armed! And will Colonel C.'s body be left to rot in the pool? What a nasty thing. Why did Hangfire kill the Colonel at exactly that moment? And why did the nurse let Lemony in? All she had to do was say: Colonel C can't have visitors yet because of medical treatment. Leave your contact and I'll call you when he can have visitors." Simple as that. I really enjoyed Captain W's participation at the end. And I almost freaked out when he mentioned Gustav, I really didn't remember that. What about Beatrice? captured the first bat at 8 years old and Lemony already knew her or not?

I believe the intention is for the Colonels' body to feed an aquatic monster.

That makes sense... Speaking of which, why so many puppies? Does he want to rule the world? End the human race? And how does so much caviar spread? Do eggs grow like moss? Is it asexual reproduction? Do the eggs themselves spread and multiply?
