*THIS IS NOT MY THEORY! IT WAS MADE BY A USER ON THE LEMONY SNICKET FANDOM PAGE ( dragoneyes618) Lemony always asked his chaperone, S. Theodora Markson, what the S in her name stood for. She never told him, always replying with something that happened to also start with S like "Stop asking" or "Silence." It's implied that the S either stands for Solitude or Sunny. But I thought of something. It probably doesn't fit, but... Many VFD members are referred to by their initials. That transcript in LS:TUA has no names, only initials, which causes some (intentional) confusion. So, imagine being a little kid and recruited by VFD, and they call you by your initial, because all good volunteers are called only by their initials in the field and not their names. They call you by the initial of your name, rather than your actual name, for the duration of your - neophytehood? Five to ten years, say. Now, some neophytes are fortunate enough to have siblings are friends their own age training with them. Some are not, and Theodora doesn't seem the kind of person who would have many friends to call each other by name. What if the reason Theodora never says what the S stands for is because she doesn't actually remember what the S stands for? this actually makes a lot of sense at first glance. But VFD does not delete your birth records. If you are an orphan, you will want to see your birth records so that you can connect with your deceased parents. And if you are not an orphan, you will visit your parents from time to time. Furthermore, S. Theodora Markson seems to have lived in the era Dewey is referring to, when VFD was simpler: anyone could join the organization simply by volunteering. This is evidenced by the fact that people in SBTS were aware of the existence of VFD and the eye that represented the organization. VFD was much less secret, precisely because it allowed new members to join the organization voluntarily. So I don't think she actually had training similar to what she was doing. She went through a lot of changes in VFD, and it must have affected her a lot. I think S doesn't say her first name so that people don't dare to have an intimacy that she is not willing to give.

It's also important to remember that Markson visits her sister in 13SI. Surely her sister wouldn't address her as S. Kit is always calling Lemony L.

I personally believe it is Solitude. When I asked the question to Handler he said it was right there in the text.
Either that or it could be her first name is just 'S.' Like L in Death Note.
