Haven’t seen the Netflix series, but even if the actress they chose for Esmé did a good job as the character…I would still much prefer Esmé Squalor to have black hair like in the books.

I think one of the interesting things about the Netflix series is that appearance wasn't a determining factor when it came to secondary characters. There were changes in ethnicity in several characters and this did not change the flow of the story in any way. So, I think Lucy Punch was a perfect choice for Esmé and her blonde hair color suits Lucy Punch. I really appreciate her beauty and her performance as Esmé was one of the best things about the series, I would say she was the most memorable actress in the series.
It's significant that Esmé's face was never shown in I'm full in Mr. Helquist's illustrations. I read somewhere that he was inspired by Ms. Bellum from The Powerpuff Girls for this detail in the art. And Ms Bellum was blonde. (Note: I actually heard this on a podcast and found it interesting, but I was able to confirm if it's true) So I think Lucy Punch being blonde was accidentally consistent with Mr. Helquist's original inspiration.

Well now I feel stupid for making this thread, LOL. Do not feel this way. It's just your opinion, and our opinion. After all, forums are for expressing opinions and hearing opinions. We are adults who are fans of children's books (at least most of us)... we already assume that so it is very difficult for us to think that a specific opinion is stupid in itself if it was created by the mind of one of us.

Is Esme's hair colour even mentioned in the books?

No, because she's bald. That'd be offensive.
