Hallo! As discussed in the 2024 goals thread, I intend to make and consume all the food mentioned in ASOUE, doing one book per month, with the exception of January which will cover both TBB and TRR. A few of you said you'd like to be involved, which is super exciting. I can’t wait to discuss recipes with you and see our various interpretations of Snicket gastronomy!
I probably won't be able to start actually cooking anything until this weekend at the earliest, but I've put together a couple of Very Fancy Documents listing the food I will be making from TBB and TRR. I said I would make all the food mentioned in ASOUE but I should probably clarify here that I am restricting myself mostly to food which is consumed 'on-screen' as it were, or which is given special significance (ie a fond memory from before the Baudelaire mansion fire, or occasionally an item of food which appears several times but which never actually gets eaten). As such, I am skipping out things which are only mentioned in a hypothetical sense, such as Gorganzola cheese, the infamous roast beef, or veal marsala. If anyone else wants to do those things though, obviously feel free to add them to this thread!
Lastly, I will be making quite a few substitutions as I'm vegetarian, so working out what to use instead of meat in various recipes will probably be what I need to consider most carefully, and suggestions are more than welcome! The Café Salmonella is going to be an interesting challenge lol.
Anyway, without further ado, here are my first two lists!
So I'll be starting with the Poes' dismal dinner ( ), and my first question is: should I attempt to make this palatable in some way (ie, adding seasoning, butter for the potatoes etc.), or go for the authentic, miserable experience the Baudelaires had? And what should I use instead of chicken? Please discuss, and lmk if you're going to join me in this!

Yes! I made puttanesca sauce at the weekend (I wanted to do them in order but it was just most convenient to do that first), I shall be uploading my pictures and thoughts on it soon! And will be tackling my next recipe soon.

I had a mushroom pasta dish last week that wasn’t exactly stroganoff, but similar. I just made Chocolate Pudding from this recipe, though I added cinnamon. I didn’t have any semisweet or bittersweet chocolate, so instead I used the cheap milk chocolate I had on hand, giving the whole thing a homemade storebought taste. It is aggressively mediocre. I have made Pasta Puttanesca several times, and I have found this recipe to be really great. I also made Coconut Cream Cake in either 2019 or 2020 but I don’t recall the recipe I used for that.

Thanks for the updates, so glad people are getting into this!
January has been a bit of a rollercoaster for me so I'm very very behind, but I intend to get ingredients for as many of these recipes as I can on Friday, and hopefully squeeze everything into the last few days. And I haven't forgotten I still need to share my puttanesca sauce pictures!

I somehow missed the first few posts of this so I haven't been doing any of this, except the things that were a coincidence, which were porrige with raspberries and popcorn. Now I really don't know what to do because I still like the idea of doing this, but there is not much of January left. Also the first dish is just really offputting because I don't think I can physically eat boiled potatoes and the other two things are things I would never choose to eat either. It feels like such a waste to miss an actual enjoyable meal to have it. But if I skip the first item on the list, is the whole thing even worth doing? Help!

I'm wayyy further behind than I meant to be, so some of my January dishes will most likely end up being made in February, it's no big deal! The first dish is off-putting to me too, but I have determined I will do it (with vegan chicken), just have a very small portion and then eat the rest with added seasoning.

small is a good idea. I have seen random videos online of people making burgers the size of a coin or fried eggs the size of a fingernail, maybe I could try making a micro-meal of similar dimensions. It seems easy enough because it's just cutting out a tiny piece of each thing and the boiling would probably just take a few seconds.
I am also disappointed with myself for not replying to this thread with the only correct response: WHERE IS THE ROAST BEEF?

It took me an embarrassing long time to figure out what tinned peaches were, I was imagining peaches made of tin and was trying to remember when the Baudelaires ate those. All joking aside, I'm working all day this weekend but I'm going to be making popcorn on Monday.

I now have ingredients for:
Chocolate pudding
Porridge with raspberries
Mushroom stroganoff
Pancakes
Toast
Tinned peaches
Popcorn
Raw carrots
Coconut cake (I hate coconut so this is going to be interesting)
Boiled boringness
So I will hopefully be making/consuming all these in the next few days. Just missing the cereal I think!
