twigz what an amazing sentence. Obviously the answer is yes. Please lmk what cereal you choose! Ok, SO! I am finally going to start documenting my efforts. So far, and completely out of order, I have made: Puttanesca sauce Burnt toast (courtesy of my mum, who burned it by mistake lol) So, first, the Puttanesca sauce. This was easy, as I've made it many many times before. It only required one substitution to be vegetarian: instead of anchovies, I added a chopped onion, just to bulk it out a bit and because it tastes nice. Here is a picture showing, from left to right: spaghetti cooking in the saucepan, one chopped onion and many chopped olives on a chopping board, and some garlic already in the saucepan. It's very quick to make, and super delicious. I made this first because I already had all the necessary ingredients, but I would like to make it again with different olives (I just used regular black olives from a jar, but it would be fun to have a mixture of really nice olives), and fresh tomatoes rather than tinned ones. I would also love to try this with curly spaghetti, which I haven’t had in years. I got fresh parsley straight from the garden though so that was fun. My biggest tip for making this taste amazing is to cook half the garlic at the beginning, then add in some more right at the end, so that it retains a strong flavour. Rating: 13/13, I potato ing love puttanesca sauce. Next, the burnt toastA serendipitous breakfast, as I wanted it to burn for the this challenge, but my mum didn't realise that and just happened to burn it anyway. Plain, burnt. Still burnt, but with the addition of butter and marmite. Not too much to say about this. It's toast. I like toast. I'm happy with it being a bit burnt. Also this was homemade bread so that's always good. Rating: 7/13, this was fine, perfectly edible, but nothing extraordinary. That's all for now! But I shall be making more tomorrow, hopefully: porridge with raspberries for breakfast, a very small portion of boring boiled stuff for lunch, mushroom stroganoff for supper. Or at least one of those.

<3 <3 <3 I feel so supported rn Also, I have made my next meal! I will be going back to do the rest of The Bad Beginning, but tonight I made Mushroom Stroganoff, from The Reptile Room I used this recipe, although I also added some red wine, a few dried mushrooms along with the fresh ones, and I cooked the rice myself rather than buying weird pre-cooked stuff. Oh and I doubled the amount of garlic because, you know, garlic. Here are my fresh mushrooms. Cup, shiitake, oyster, and king oyster. The dried ones I added were shiitake, oyster, and one more I can't currently remember. The finished meal. Stroganoff, rice, and raw spinach with vinaigrette. I also added a couple of extra dollops of soured cream to mix with the rice. Rating: 12/13, this was deliciousssssss. Only reason it loses a point is that I should have cooked the dried mushrooms a little longer to fully rejuvenate them (though they were still very tasty).

I still have lots of recipes to complete for January, but for anyone who wants to move on to The Wide Window, here are the meals for February: If anyone else has done any more recipes, please do share updates! I'm really enjoying this challenge so far, and hopefully I'll catch up with myself soon do I can start doing these in order.

Porridge/oatmeal with fresh raspberriesNo, those raspberries are not enormous: I just really hate porridge so I made a tiny bowl of it. Rating: 13/13 for the raspberries, the only good thing about this. -5/13 for the porridge, this was horrible. Overall: 1/13, would not try again. (Yeah I know 1 is not the average of those two scores but honestly it did not deserve higher.) Next up will (finally!) be the super boring boiled meal from the Poe household.

Boiled vegan alternative to chicken, boiled potato, blanched green (string) beanI'm loling at how sad this picture is. I didn’t want to eat an entire meal this bland so only made a tiny portion, then roasted and seasoned the rest of the potatoes, which was delicious. So here is my vey sad recreation of an average meal at the Poe household. As this isn't real chicken, I didn't boil it, because that would probably have sapped out all the flavour and made it go weird. So I just had it straight from the pack (you don't have to cook this variety). The potato is the only truly boiled thing: the bean I just lightly steamed. Anyway, for one mouthful of food, it was perfectly palatable. But I would never want a whole meal of this, it's far too bland. Rating: 3/13

I love the look of the pasta puttanesca and the Mushroom Stroganoff and even the toast, because I like my toast too dark. I'm considering which toppings would qualify for this. The porridge looks sad to me because it's tiny and I love porridge. I'm having porridge tomorrow morning, but with cherries (and possibly some almond extract for a sort of cherry bakewell flavour) If you wanted the boring meal to look properly sad, you would have to put the bean the other way round. I think when I do this I will make a similar size portion and use plain unflavoured tofu in place of the chicken, which is less similar to actual chicken but makes it extra bland. I'm not even really vegetarian but I would feel bad for eating real chicken if I know I won't even enjoy it. I don't know when I'm doing any of those because Isadora Is a Door says he wants to do it "properly when we have time" and I am unsure what that means or when that is.

I like my toast dark too, so this wasn't a hardship! I hope you enjoyed your porridge. I hadn't had any in years until yesterday, and it only reminded me how much I really don't like it. Haha yeah I noticed the bean was making a smiley face, but then I thought it almost made it look more depressingly dismal, rather like the cheer-up cheeseburgers. Unflavoured tofu sounds like a good substitute! Whenever you get a chance to start this, do share updates!

Chocolate pudding I opted to make this from scratch because I'm not a fan of ready-mix stuff. I used this recipe as a rough base but sort of halved it and didn’t use very precise measurements. It turned out fine, but quite rich and rather bitter. Rating: 5/13, just fine, nothing special. Wouldn’t say no to it, but probably wouldn't make it again either.

I don't know when I'm doing any of those because Isadora Is a Door says he wants to do it "properly when we have time" and I am unsure what that means or when that is. I meant that you always complain if we have additional shopping items to buy... Also i feel that ATWQ needs to be included in this.

OMG a Warriors book! Anyway, that pudding looks really good(is that coconut on top)and the tiny porridge is so cute. Yessss I love Warriors, I have all the books! I actually urgently need to rearrange my bookshelves because there are so many and I don't have room. Thanks! No, it's shavings of white chocolate! I actually really hate coconut so I'm not sure what to do about the coconut cream cake. Perhaps again just a really small portion, like one coconut cupcake and the rest can be without coconut ... Isadora Is a Door Including ATWQ would be great, especially as it mentions a lot of really nice sounding food. I think I'll have to do that after I've finished all the ASOUE recipes though, as I'm already behind where I should be. Anyway, although twigz very kindly ate cereal in my honour, I still felt I had to do this properly and eat my own cereal, so: These are Waitrose's 'Essential' (lol) Choco Pops, ie chocolate rice crispies. I had them with skinny oat milk. Rating: 6/13 This was pleasant enough, and I'll make my way through the pack, but I'm not generally much into cereal.

I like cereal but I hardly ever have an actual bowl of it because it just makes me feel hungry again not much later. I normally have it with yoghurt and fruit and sometimes I just grab a handful as a snack. I'm looking forward to actually having a bowl of cereal for this.
I have made a little plan of when to make what, starting with the Tiny Boring Meal next Saturday.
I'm not sure what a cold lime stew is supposed to be. From the book it would make sense for it to be made without cooking, rather than cooked and then chilled. But wouldn't that be more of a salad than a stew? And what could the ingredients be if they aren't cooked?
