ERZATZ means replacement. (violet's rope)It's german The way you wrote it it sounds like you meant missing I thought it meant "fake" or "not genuine" or "unreal". Wasn't that pretty much how they presented it in TEE? In fact, I'm sure that it is, and that you're just wrong. MrQuagmire - too bad. Edit: Getting boring now...

Thank you, Merriam Webster!
Pronunciation: 'er-"säts, -"zäts, er-'; '&r-"sats Function: adjective Etymology: German ersatz-, from Ersatz, n., substitute : being a usually artificial and inferior substitute or imitation
It seems to me that the word originally meant an inferior substitute, but it sort of evolved to mean something more like "counterfeit" or "fake".

I am vindicated! Huzzah!
Also, what do you think of my twist on the Baudelaire-training theory (previous page)?

Your theories regarding the VFD training of the Baudelaires were well-supported and very good.
I don't think Sir is in VFD, but if he is he's definitely working for Olaf. Note that he "wears" a Veiled Facial Disguise of cigar smoke. Cigars aren't in the disguise kit, though. Perhaps the original founders of Lucky Smells were VFDers.
I've long suspected that Hector was a crow trainer, and perhaps later books will verify that. Good theory about Olaf and the crows, but if he tried to steal them he must have failed. As of TSS, good VFD supposedly still had the carrier crows. Again, we'll probably have this a bit better sorted out in later books.
