Seeing as this seems the place for touchy subjects:
Is anybody here dealing with mental disorders that they're open about? Do you get offended when people misuse the meaning? (Example: "That person is, like, SO obsessive-compulsive!" or "That's so retarded.") Do you think that medication or talking to a psychologist works better?
I, personally, have obsessive-compulsive disorder. It's really tough sometimes, because I have to walk in and out of rooms a bunch of times, and I have to hit backspace a lot and retype stuff, and countless other things. I went to a psychologist, but she wanted to concentrate on other aspects and put me on medication. #_# I now take St. Johns Wort (an anti-depressant herb) after reading a study about it, and it seems to help.
So. Anyone? Or am I completely alone here?

*shrugs* Dunno. And by "mental" I don't mean a bit odd, just so you know. Meh. I knew I probably shouldn't have made this topic...

you mean people with autism?
I have a t story about that
Ok, this kid moved away. but when i was in middle school this kid was well.....a nice way to say it....mentally retared(sorry couldnt think of a nicer way). Ok anyways, this guy always teased him, and one day, this guy was running across the street, and he was about to get hit by a bus or sumthin, and the mental kid told him to stop and ran out into the street and pushed him on the sidewalk, so in a way he saved his life.

I always get slightly offended when someone uses the word "retarded". My mum's cousin has schizophrenia. Without his medication he's basically uncontrollable, but on his medication he's kind of zombie-like. When it comes living using medication that causes effects like that, you wonder if it's better to be a danger to yourself and locked up without medication, or to live in a zombie-ish state while using it.

I just can't do anything outside my bedroom without washing my hands before and after, and I can't sleep without a shower. I don't get offended by people misusing "retarded" or "obsessive-compulsive". I get what they mean, and as long as they don't mean to be offensive or rude to retarded and obsessive people then I don't see a problem. *Shrug*

It doesn't bother me when people use it occasionaly, but it really starts to get to me when they use it to describe every single person and/or event in their life.

I think that just about everyone can be diagnosed with some mental disorder or other. It seems kind of normal. Just about everyone in my particular circle on the internet has some sort of mental/behavioural disorder, though I don't know how many people I know in real life are like that. Maybe someone with a mental disorder is more likely to spend many hours online.

I don't think that that's an online or offline thing, it's just the way it happens when a friendship is dependant like that. I've known several people to do that in real life. I've never heard of anyone actually saying "Fine, kill yourself" though.

My best friend in kindergarten had some kind of mental disorder thing. He's not exactly retarded, just a little bit off.
I saw him a couple years ago... his parents drove him up to see me because they remembered what great friends we were in kindergarten.
This kid is really sweet and nice, but I do find it hard to sit at a table with him for an hour while desperately thinking of things to talk about.
Other than that, I haven't really met people who have mental disorders. I wish I knew more about them so I could handle and understand them better...
Swans, I've said this before and I'll say it again. I really admire how you take care of your grandmother.
Pester... I know people like that too. What with the goth movement (I'm convinced this is part of it), it's 'cool' to be depressed. In this world we live in, people become more and more self-centered, possibly because their therapists tell them to. We should be like the ancient Greeks, generous to a fault...
