I get it. You only get 1 unit of Karma per hour. I also went looking on Proboards site to read about Karma.

At a forum my sister goes to you can see the amounts of the different types of karma a person has. The other forum I go to it says +?/-?, just like your sister's forum. Then on the site status page it shows who is the most positive and most negative.

Karma is on my other board too. I think they use it pretty often. They also have some money thing. Don't know how often I'll use the karma thing, but I probably will.

I don't like this idea of karma as I don't think it will be a very fair judging system. I can see it now, people will be making alliances with each other to karma each other up every hour. Instead of giving positive karma to people they think worthy of it they'll be swapping karma for no worthy posts. And perhaps this could lead to fights. Then people will go judging people by the amount of karma they get, in other words their true opinion of someone might be obscured by their karma points. Then you'll have those angry people who just find amusement out of smitting people every hour. Then you might get in an argument with someone and find yourself in a smitting war where you both end up with -17 karma. In conclusion I seriously don't think this is a good idea, karma will be taken advantage of. Maybe if we only give the smite/exalt options to the moderators or a responsible group of karma police. It might work out, but I still don't like the idea.

I like it, but I do agree it should be given to moderators only because it can lead to a stupid newbie fight about having no Karma.

I agree with the aforementioned general sentiment. In all the forums I've seen that have a karma system, it's turned more into a popularity contest, rather than the rating system it's supposed to be.
So... yeah... I'm not really thrilled by this addition.

I doubt people will judge you by how much karma you have. They'll judge you by what you have to say. I'll probably end up with karma in the negatives.

If you give it to moderators only then makes it mean something and this really shouldn't be taken that seriously.

Yeah, it really shouldn't. I just give karma if I feel they told me something I can learn from.

I know most of us here are decent, responsible people but there will be the occasional karma disaster.

If it's occasional then it doesn't matter.
