I think that while Olaf was off chasing the Baudelaires, the couple with auras of menace sort of filled in for him to destroy all V.F.D. sanctuaries.
The Bauds didn't arrive at Veblen Hall until the Very Fancy Doilies. So maybe it was sold earlier as a surprise lot. Or maybe auctions were in a few weeks before so they held an In Auction in which they sold the viper.
My theory is that 667 was built by V.F.D members. They put the headquarters on the top floor so that people will be discouraged from going there. The owner died and his less accomodating heir booted his dad's friends out and rented the apartment to Jerome.
Maybe Eleanora was doing a report there.
Maybe they are afraid of the Baudelaire ghosts

Seven answered one of your questions; it was one that I was confused about. Anyway, it wasn't necessary for Jerome and Esme to be married for Olaf to burn down the mansion. The 667 penthouse could have been a sanctuary for good VFD before Esme took it over. Olaf came to the Baudelaire mansion for some sort of sceduled meeting (evidence for this in TBBRE notes). The survivor, if there is one, used the passageway to escape. My question is, how did VFDers get up and down that 66-story shaft? Was there a ladder installed, which Olaf removed at some point? Jacques was under the impression that the survivor of the baud fire was rescued by Jacques or Lemony Snicket(who the parents were going to meet with) and the survivor was hidden in the fickle fountain.

My stupid little thing is school. WHY DON'T THE BAUDS GO?!
There is a thread about this, just thought I'd put it here too. Also, who are the food-fighting people tiny in the background of the american edition of the cover art of TAA?

And why is nero giving them their lunch on the cover? He was never in the cafeteria in the book... Are the man with beard and woman with hair the M and N on the family tree? Is sailor snicket in LSUA Lemony? Is the song Dreary Dreary mentioned in bbre the same song we hear in the mm audiobook? Where is Jerome now? How old are Lemony, Jacques, and K? Was Jacques allowed to finish his tea?

And why is nero giving them their lunch on the cover? He was never in the cafeteria in the book... That confuses me too. I think he's just taking away their fork, which for some reason is green. Maybe it's ugly plastic silverware, which always adds to misery. I certainly think so. They are Olaf's older siblings, possibly twins. Why do so many sets of siblings have names with alphabetically adjacent initials? He could be; all the sailors in that photo are named for children's authors. I've never heard it but I think it has to do with Beatrice. Can you get me the lyrics? Still at his apartment, I guess. Older than you. Jacques and K are older than Lemony. Probably not. How tragic.

I've never heard it but I think it has to do with Beatrice. Can you get me the lyrics? . It most certainly is about Beatrice. I have it recorded too. I don't wanna waste time posting ALL the lyrics but I will tell u that the words dreary dreary are in it and that it centers around Beatrice being "gone, gone, gone..." I was just wanting it confirmed.

I remember reading the lyrics at a site which I'm pretty sure is gone. One part went:
"Gone, gone, my Beatrice. Gone are the lips I wished to kiss. Into the bleak and black abyss. Gone, gone, gone."
That's all I remember, and it surely is memorable.

Yup those are the right lyrics alright. "Her teary teary eyes once bright, dreary signs of dew... Dreary dreary full the night and eerie light of the moon." I should listen to that recording. It sounded so depressing that my cousins and I sped it up and when u do that it sounds HILARIOUS! We could not stop laughing and the recording makes me laugh whenever I hear it.

Jacques never managed to finish his tea becuase two half-full cups were waiting for the Snicket mother when she got home from the mill.

We don't know that for sure though. Jacques insisted he was allowed to finish it. I trust jacques, why would he lie about finishing his tea?

Maybe he has some sort of false memory thing going on, or he was talking about a different cup of tea. You never know with Snicket.

I suppose... Will the mortmain mountains ever recover from the vfd fire? Where did M and N(I'm calling mad with beard and woman with hair that even if it's not who they really are) get the snicket file? And why would they give it to Olaf? It's important!!! Why was the 13th page left in Heimlich Hospital? Why wasn't the other half of the hospital finished? Where did Babs talk from?(I think I already asked how Olaf found her...) Did Caligari Carnival always stay in the hinterlands? Did the important piece of evidence in the figurine survive somehow?(we can only hope) What is K's name? Are the J,K, and L we see the snickets we think they are? One parent is E, cept their father was Jacob... So either his real name started with e or e was their mom, but then their name wouldn't be snicket.. Unless both their grandpas had the name snicket which would be really weird... Is the H on the family tree Hector? Is the B on the family tree Beatrice? Will we ever find the wherabouts of A? Is the G on the family tree Gorgon?

I suppose... Will the mortmain mountains ever recover from the vfd fire? I'm not sure what you mean by recover, but it's likely that the river will eventually run pure again when the ashes wash out to sea. And the salmon, snow gnats, and eagles will be fine. I think they stole it from the hospital, while disguised as "inspectors" or something. But why did they leave behind page 13? Were they lacking in paper clips or something? And they gave it to Olaf because it was important for him. I'll answer more questions later, but I want to check another thread.

No, then Lemony and Beatrice would be related. Then they're not allowed to marry.

"Gone, gone, my Beatrice. Gone are the lips I wished to kiss. Into the bleak and black abyss. Gone, gone, gone." Do you think the, "Into the bleak AND BLACK ABYSS" Is important? I think it is...I think she was thrown down the ersatz elevator by Esme....because in book 6, the song is, "this abyss". What do you think?
