Wouldn't you notice a sugar bowl if it was in your hat? Furthermore, doesn't he often remove his hat. If it did not bulge due to a large bowl in it, you would think it would fall out of the hat or something... Just a thought. LBeall

Mr. Poe took his hat to the Hotel to get it cleaned and one of the volunteers hid the sugar bowl in it. But seriously, that would be rather unlikely. He had something in his hat way before the sugar bowl even arrived at the Hotel.

That would actually be quite hilarious. Mr. Poe took his hat to the Hotel to get it cleaned and one of the volunteers hid the sugar bowl in it. Maybe that's how the sugar bowl ended up in the hotel laundry room, if he had it under his hat when he went to the hotel. But I agree with your second point. Mr Poe apparently had something under his hat in TBB, and the sugar bowl has just recently arrived at the hotel.

The sugar bowl isn't particularly large, and I doubt it's particularly heavy, so there wouldn't be a problem with it being in his hat. The question is - why would it be in his hat? As others have pointed out, the sugar bowl only recently arrived at the Hotel, and before it got there, it was in the Valley of Four Drafts and then in Gorgonian Grotto, and I don't think Poe's in a position to have visited either. Some have speculated that it was in the Baudelaire mansion, and he took it from the wreckage before giving it to somebody else. While there's nothing really against that theory, I just don't consider it very likely. Anyone think I should re-open the old " Path of the sugar bowl" thread to discuss stuff like that? However, he did have something under his hat. People have speculated about this before... I think "a gun" was one response, or at least an answer popular in fanfiction (or in at least one). I don't really have a clue. I think it's to do with his and his sister's dealings with a mysterious "You-Know-Who," though. Something which he was asked to keep safe for a while by someone he thought was a friend, perhaps? But that answer is basically just a spin-off of my personal theory about Mr. Poe.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Poe was so dim that he didn't notice if the Sugar Bowl was in his hat.

If it's in there, he knows. But I think what's in his hat isn't necessarily the sugar bowl. I'll bet it's just some miniscule V.F.D. thing with little or no plot significance.

i doubt that as the reason for TBBRE was to insert clues that whenet the before the vfd plot had formed

If I understand you correctly, I agree. Handler basically says that in his introduction to the extra chapter.

wouldnt it be really snicketish to have the sugar bowl in in mr. poes hat the entire series and he was killed for his ignorance although it seems in the series ignorance leads to villanany like the rampaging villiages

Actually, that kinda makes sense; i.e. the sugar bowl was in the laundry room of a hotel. *raises eyebrow*

Maybe Mr. poe was sent by J.S. to deliver something to the Baudelaires, without poe knowing it.
