Part one: Baudelaires in training.
Are the Baudelaires in training? Maybe so. I think that they are for the following reasons:
1. TUA, Page 38-39:
'R: I will finish. We are entering
people's homes, taking young children
who show exeptional observtional
and/or notetaking skills, and isolating
them for long periods at least, from
people they know. We assign them to
strangers and scatter them across the
globe, preforming errands that are per-
plexing to them, until their ankles
have healed, until we know they can be
trusted, and until we know that no one
is searching for them any longer. Then,
finally, we bring them to headquarters
so they can learn the skills they need
before they are introduced back into
society, in order to make sure the
world remains, as we say, quiet.'
This is very much like what the B. children are doing.
They're being isolated for a long period of time from people they know, They have been adopted by many different strangers,
They are doing many things which are pleanty perplexing to them, and they are getting quite close to being presumed dead.
2. In The Slippery Slope, Page 201, Violet says: '"It's like we're members of V.F.D. already. We're sending signals and breaking codes, and finding secrets in the ruins of a fire."'
Is this too obvious? or just obvious enough?
3. It certainly fits with the plot, somewhat. And it's the kind of thing V.F.D. would do, being secret and all.
It's just the right amount of crazyness that people tend the dismiss it, but this /is/ a book with an unhappy ending after all. It's meant to be weird.
~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~
Part two: Members of V.F.D.
My list of possible members of V.F.D. is as follows:
1. Lemony Snicket
2. Jacques Sniket
3. Kit Snicket
4. Dr. Montgomery Montgomery - Montgomery is most likely a member of 'Good' V.F.D.
5. Sally Sebald
6. Gustav Sebald
7. Beatrice
8. C.M. Kornbluth - TSS Pages 192 and 193.
9. Mr. Baudelaire - Had tunnel leading to Penthouse on 667 Dark Avenue. Sung 'The world is quite here'.
10. Mrs. Baudelaire - Ditto.
11. Dr. Issac (Ike) Anwhistle - Owned the coded book. Brother of Gregor.
12. Larry - Waiter helping V.F.D.
13. Mr. Quagmire - Had tunnel leading to Dr. Montgomery Montgomery's house. Obvious members of V.F.D.
14. Mrs. Quaqmire - Ditto.
15. Hector Anwhistle - Possible Volunteer. Last name is not certain, he is in the hot air balloon with Duncan and Isadora. Reference to his Volunteericity TSS page 315.
16. Duncan Quagmire - Refered to as a voluteer. TSS page 315.
17. Isadora Quagmire - Ditto.
18. Quigley Quagmire - Possible member, if so, possible liar. (Good side though.)
19. K - Name unknown
20. J - Ditto
21. M - Ditto
22. R - Ditto
23. R -Ditto. (Duchess of Winnipeg).
24. L - Ditto.
25. Olaf
26. Esmé
27. Fernard (Hook handed man).
28. Fiona - Daughter of Capt. W. Later joined with Olaf. Of her own free will is to be seen.
29. Captain Widdershins - Helper of the Baudelaires.
30. Justice Strauss - J.S. Possible member but not very helpful.
31. Ivan Lachrymose - Wrote a book members of V.F.D. should read. Perhaps to old to have ever been in V.F.D.
32. Olivia (Lulu) - Certain V.F.D. member, perhaps retired. Dead. Not good nor bad.
33. Mr. Poe - Possible member, whether good or bad remains to be seen.
34. Jerome Squalor - Not very bright but at least reciving letters from Jacques telling him what to do.
35. Elanora Poe - Most likely not actual member but reciving orders from Esmé.
36. Gregor Anwhistle - Cultivated the poisonous mushrooms to use on Bad V.F.D.
37. Bruce - Possible member of V.F.D. If so most likely bad side.
38. Olaf's other henchmen. - Most of them not ofically members.
39. M -Whichever one of these is a female might be TWWHBNB and the male TMWHBNB. - Member of bad V.F.D.. Most likely leader.
40. N - Ditto.
41. Uncle Elwyn - Mentioned in TAA. Brother of Mr. Baudelaire. Possible member.
42. Bertrand - Mentioned as a lion trainer in TBB:TRE.
AS you can see there are many possibilities. Dreadfully compicated.
Because of what Quigley said on page 164 of TSS, ('"Didn't you think of calling the athoritize?""I guess I wasn't thinking very clearly."'), I have reason to belive that he is hiding something.
~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~
Part three: The sugar bowl secret.
For starters, let's list what we /do/ know.
1. The sugar bowl /contains/ the secret. Not /is/ the secret.
2. Jerome asked for sugar bowls to be at his wedding, perhaps under the instruction of Jacques.
3. Esmé ordered for there /not/ to be any sugar bowls at their wedding.
4. Lemony asked for sugar bowls to be at /his/ wedding.
5. Whatever the sugar bowl secret is, it is supposed to have remained with the sugar bowl still.
6. Lemony stole a sugar bowl from Esmé. Most likely the blame landed on Beatrice.
7. It's so important that Esmé puts it obouve money. (Why?)
8. Olaf thought money was more important.
9. (I think) It was tossed overboard. (The Prospero?)
It still could be that a V.F.D.er could dress up as a sugar bowl (much like Lemony dressed up like a chest of drawers).
If they were so important that peole wanted to find that person. (i.e. Lemony, survivor of a fire, so on.)
However, I very much doubt that this is the case.
It is, of course, a very common thought that the sugar bowl contains a microphone.
I don't know why whomever was recording Elanora and Arthur didn't use it, but that's beside the point.
If something important was recorded, they would want it.
i.e. When they said that all they needed to get was the last piece of evidence that could send them to jail, they might not have meant a piece of /paper/, but a /recording/.
~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~
Part four: Concering Snickets.
The Snickets:
Jacob Snicket - Lemony, Kit, and Jacques Snicket.
The Snicket File:
What's in it? Maybe we will never know. But we can try to figure out! Things of which we are fairly certain:
1. It contains a photograph of the Baudelaire parents standing next to Jacques and most likely Lemony.
2. It has 13 pages.
3. It contains the evidence that could put Olaf and his troupe in jail.
4. Everyone wants it.
So, as you can see we don't know much of anything ate all.
It seems that the file contains information on the Snicket, and maybe other, fires. But that's all we know, and perhaps all we will ever know.
~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~
Part five: The Baudelaire parents.
Spent hours reserching this, especially Kit Snicket. But it's a no-go. Impossible. They don't recognize her. Bleh.
I have no idea who the parents are.
~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~
Part six: Beatrice.
Oi. Just about the biggest secret ever. Let's see what we can do with this.
Things about Beatrice:
1. She was a member of good V.F.D.
2. She was going to marry Lemony but didn't because of something she read in /The Daily Punctilio/.
3. She was a profesional trainer of the Volunteer Feline Detectives.
4. She met Esmé for the first time at an afternoon tea. (Most likely the one Lemony stole the sugar bowl at.)
5. The picture on page 105 of TUA is most likely of her.
6. She is /not/ the Baudelaire mother.
('...and to show this article to many volunteers, including the Baudelaire parents, the Snicket Siblings, and the woman I happen to love.' - TGG.)
7. She's dead.
8. She was not at the Building Committee for V.F.D. Perhaps she was even one of the Neophytes. (See Part eight.)
~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~
Part seven: Siblings of three.
For reasons unknown, there are many siblings of three involved with ASoUE, my list of siblings and possible siblings is as follows:
1. Lemony, Jacques, and Kit.
2. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny.
3. Duncan, Isadora, and Quigley.
4. Gregor, I (Issac), and H (Hector).
5. PFW, PFW, and sibling (Larry).
6. Olaf, (M, TMWABBNH or THWHBNB), and (N, TMWABBNH or THWHBNB).
7. Sally, Gustav, and (or Larry).
8. Fiona, Fernald, and .
9. Mr Baudelaire, Uncle Elwyn, and (or maybe Larry /here/).
10. Elanora, Arthur, and (Esmé).
Someday this list may be finished, but for now it is only guesses.
~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~
Part eight: Neophytes.
The thing about neophytes: Okay, so on page 37 of TUA, M lists the neophytes: R, L, K, B, J, E, and G.
At first I had thought that Jacques, Kit, Lemony, and Daniel to represent were at that meeting.
But on what J says on page 44 means that if Lemony and Jacques are J and L, Kit isn't there and it's a whole nother K. Let's hope not!
(For those who do not know, he says: '"...I first met all of you-except for L, of course..."')
If that was just a big Red Herring, then my list of possible neophytes is as follows:
R - Duchess of Winnipeg.
Lemony Snicket
Kit Snicket
Beatrice
Jacques Snicket
E- (Elwyn, Elanora?)
G- ? (Not Gregor or his siblings would be here, and not Geraldine I should think...)
I'm assuming that the Neophytes are young, as that is how most of the beginners of V.F.D. are.
In which case the Duchess of Winniped is most likey the Neo R, and not one of the olders, because that would make here too old.
Also, this means that unless Montgomery is very old, he was not at the Building Committee of V.F.D. either.
Also, it could be that this was a complete different J than Jacques, in which case, you may disregard all of this part.
~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~
Please note that I do not own, nor have read TGG, I only know what I know from gathering up the clues from spoilers and people talking.
Discus, dismiss, applaud, destroy. Your choice.
