Well, I stand by whatever mysterious being - Snicketfires, Derik, Tragedy, or some other power - has made this decision, even though I disagree with it. Wasn't me. Where was this thread before? Christmas 2001: My brother receives TBB and TRR, because we were lacking new Harry Potter books. I didn't like the look of them, but one day, I read them for something to do. This was just after THH came out, I believe, and the UA had just come out also. Anyway, I quickly became obsessed, and obtained all that were released over a period of months.

A girl in my class did a book review on THH when I was in year 6, that's when I first discovered them. Then I went on a Harry Potter rebellion. ;D I started just after THH too. Freaky.

It's so hard for me to remember just when I started reading them; it seems like I've been obsessed forever. No, wait, I do remember. I was at the library and looking for Animorphs books (I was on the tailend of an infatuation with them, they were just starting to not be in the libraries around here) and didn't see them. My mom was standing next to me, kind of idly looking at the books on the shelf, and she picked up The Bad Beginning. She gazed at it for a few seconds and then turned and handed it to me, saying, "Look - 'A Series of Unfortunate Events'! This looks funny." I thought it looked kind of silly, but I put it in my bag to please my mother and checked it out. I read it, found it odd, depressing, and vaguely humorous, turned it back in, and got on with my life. I read the next three books, but in a wishy-washy sort of way, I really didn't like them that much. Then I got to tAA, and I thought it was much different, and much better. I kept reading and came to tHH, the last book published at the time, and my opinion had changed. I like the books quite a bit. But there were no more of them... Then my mom said she had seen a biography of Lemony Snicket in the bookstore. I thought she must have been mistaken, it sounded really weird and so abrupt and nothing to do with the series. But when I saw it, I bought it, I read it, I nearly died of confusion, and then I found I was hooked.
Of course, my mother denies all involvement now.

Wasn't me. Where was this thread before? Weary Writer. Curiously, I don't remember what year it was when I first read the books, just that it was in junior high school. 2001 or 2002, I think, but I can't remember which. I'm terrible at remembering years.

My friend let me borrow the first one. I was instantly hooked (sorry Fernald) and was reading it until my friend finally said "Stop reading! Moonlight is not proper light for reading!" It was a few months before TCC came out.

I was in the library, scanning the bookshelves whilst waiting for my turn on the computer when I spotted the spin on TBB. Read that. Came back for more. Loved it.
I even recalled, sometime before that, on TV, the series being advertised. I even think the voiceover was Jude Law; I bet I'm mistaken though.

I scorned ASOUE for years. My superciliousness made me unwilling to stoop to "children's books", and my zealous worship of JK Rowling meant comparisons with Harry Potter annoyed me (contradiction, I know).
Then I picked up a friend's LSUA. It was just amazing. So befuddling, so fascinating, so well done and not at all demeaning. I bought Books 1-6 and have been an ardent fan ever since.
LSUA was a bit clearer on my second reading...

Well, actually, I read them out of order. I was sitting at a book store. We were cleaning up our new house before we moved into (we were moving into a new state) I saw the newest book, which then was The Hostile Hospital. It looked like something I would like. So, the next time I found out my dad was going to the bookstore, I asked him to get it. I like it, so I read TVV, then TEE, and then I read 1-5. After that I started reading them when they come out and I have a hardback copy of every book. Including the Unathorized Autobiography. I love Snicket's work. Everything he does is wonderful. So far, TGG is my favorite.

In the third grade I saw The Hostile Hospital in a book order and I got it, and I found the whole "stop reading this book" thing fairly ammusing, but I didn't really understand the book, after all it was book 8. Then my best friend had read the first few and told me about them and it sounded cool, so eventually (end 5th grade) I read the first book and was hooked on it ever since ;D
